A Note from Declan, 7 March

Dear Grif-friend,

Because our residence, the SBW Stables Theatre, is so small, we usually maintain two opening nights. This is the one manner we are able to squeeze in all the individuals who should be there: donors, reviewers, glamorous pink carpet celebrities (Rhonda Burchmore hasn’t accepted an invite but however we reside in hope). But for The Lewis Trilogy, this meant holding two opening night-and-days—and over Saturday and Sunday our hard-working forged undertook six performances in 48 hours.

It was a joyous but additionally unhappy event, realizing that this was the ultimate such occasion within the SBW Stables Theatre in its present type. If you’ve seen the Trilogy you’ll know that Jeremy Allen’s set design exposes the unique floorboards and brickwork of the Stables, in all their distressed, damaged, two-hundred-year-old glory. Over the opening performances I swear you would really feel the constructing vibrating with the layers of literal sweat, tears, and blood which have soaked into it over the a long time—an vitality that buoyed this forged, this viewers, these performs to spectacular heights of grandeur and heartbreak.

It was applicable, then, that this occasion was shared with a few of the legends who’ve constructed Griffin into what it’s at this time: Noel HoddaIan PhippsChris PuplickJohn SenczukJohn StoneKaren Rodgers in addition to former inventive administrators Lee Lewis and David Berthold. Many of those dwelling icons left stunning, heartfelt messages on a wall of the lobby the place we’re accumulating Griffin recollections—if you happen to’re seeing the Trilogy within the coming weeks, please add a narrative, a scene, or a second to it. Keep a lookout for Lee’s message, which is the other way up and in a nook of the wall (in typical Lee vogue: not demanding consideration, however filled with attractive knowledge and sentiment for these observant sufficient to look and pay attention).

I’m past pleased with this forged and this group, who’ve been turning themselves inside-out to create this present since we began rehearsals (in the beginning of December 2023!). They’ve met the significance of this event with one thing really grand, in its degree of craft and care. The opinions assume it’s OK too, so you’ll want to get alongside, and take a look at this attractive manufacturing trailer. Especially if you happen to reside inside the 2010 and 2011 postcode—come alongside tomorrow night time for a particular Locals efficiency of This Much is True!

Much love,
Declan x
