A Note from Gavin, 24 July

24.07.25

Hi Grif-friends,

Very excited to say a really enthusiastic “Hi!” to you all and I’m thrilled to have joined the Grif-family because the Ticketing Manager.

My love for Griffin is aware of no bounds and started in essentially the most cliché of the way… on a date (or no less than, I believed it was a date). It was 2008 and I arrived on the pokey outdated lobby an hour earlier than the present was resulting from begin—thirty minutes earlier than I used to be meant to fulfill my “date.” Sitting within the lobby, I had no concept simply how a lot I might like to be within the SBW Stables Theatre. We headed upstairs and shuffled into our spot on the bench seats (which, as I’d quickly be taught, shouldn’t be my favorite spot within the theatre). We eagerly awaited the second when Lachlan Philpott’s Colder started. The home was full, the viewers chattering and simply because the lights dimmed my “date” leant over and mentioned, “Remind me to tell you about the guy I’ve started seeing.” I’ll at all times be grateful to Lachlan’s writing as a result of I bear in mind Colder way more vividly than that sentence. Yet, so far as reminiscences go, they’re eternally tied collectively.

Something totally magical occurred that evening. It eclipsed any preconceived notion of how I believed the evening would go. I fell deeply, madly, hopelessly in love with Griffin. And I needed extra. That one play became two… then three after which instantly I discovered myself subscribing 12 months after 12 months. The Boys, Prima Facie, First Love is the Revolution, The Floating World, Angela’s Kitchen, Between Two Waves, The Bleeding Tree and so many extra… these works fuelled my love of Australian theatre.

I nonetheless bear in mind the joys of stepping onto the kite-shaped stage for the primary time. I attended the 2014 General Auditions and an especially ill-prepared Gavin stepped up onto the fluffy pink stage (Declan Greene’s Eight Gigabytes of Hardcore Pornography was presently in season) and a really empathetic Lee Lewis smiled ever so supportively as I attempted my hardest to recollect the strains to a monologue from Jane Bodie’s This Years Ashes. Head held excessive, I walked out of the audition realizing that although I’ll by no means take to that stage once more, I obtained to face and dream, even for a short second.

As the years glided by, I discovered myself answering the decision to maneuver to Melbourne. Still, I at all times made positive that I had the time put apart to fly up 4 or 5 occasions a 12 months to see Griffin’s newest providing. Never did I think about {that a} transfer again to Sydney would land me a task with my favorite firm and but, right here I’m, scripting this, surrounded by performs and fervour. Passion for brand new Australian works. Passion for artists and writers. Passion for the brand new theatre being constructed proper outdoors the window. Passion for the audiences we are able to’t wait to welcome into the brand new house.

I’m actually trying ahead to attending to know you all in my very own small manner, connecting you with the works. So, give me a name, ebook a ticket or two and I’ll little doubt see you on the subsequent Griffin present.

Talk quickly,
Gavin
