Until at this time, we hadn’t heard from the Milwaukee screamo band Snag in virtually two years, for the reason that July 2021 launch of their album Death Doula. That album was largely about local weather nervousness, and environmental considerations play into the band’s new single out at this time. “Invasive Species (Cop City)” is a protest music about Atlanta’s proposed “Cop City,” the place acres of forest land are to be cleared out and changed with a police coaching facility specializing in militarized city warfare.
Cop City has impressed persistent protests over the previous two years, each on the grounds of defending forest lands and opposing the militarization of police — and the cops have pushed again towards these protests. In January, police killed a 26-year-old protester named Manuel Terán. Now Snag are contributing this music to the protest motion. In an announcement to Brooklyn Vegan, they defined:
It’s about Cop City, the proposed clear-cutting of a forest close to Atlanta for the needs of erecting a police coaching facility that might allow cops to apply repressing city uprisings akin to the 2020 George Floyd rebellion. It’s completely gross and the other way we have to be going as a society. And it represents a lot of what’s incorrect with our tradition: the logic that claims you may lower down a forest to construct a pretend American metropolis wherein to coach the cops to do battle with Americans is similar logic of domination that claims you may pressure a trans particular person to de-transition, pressure a pregnant particular person to provide delivery, or poison indigenous land for fossil gasoline extraction.
