The story follows Sam (Everett), a real Kansan who struggles to suit the hometown mildew. Grappling with loss and acceptance, Sam’s saving grace is singing and it leads her on a journey to find herself and a neighborhood of outsiders who don’t slot in however don’t quit. Other characters embrace her co-worker and good friend, Joel (Hiller); Sam’s resentful and scrappy sister, Tricia (Garrison); and unremarkable brother-in-law, Rick (McCarthy). In the second season, Sam and Joel have settled into a snug routine. But nothing stays the identical perpetually.
