Book Talk: The Art of Assembly—Political Theatre Today

The Martin E. Segal Theatre Center presents Book Talk: The Art of Assembly—Political Theatre Today livestreaming on the worldwide, commons-based, peer-produced HowlRound TV community on Thursday 4 May 2023 at 9:30 a.m. PDT (San Francisco, UTC -7) / 11:30 a.m. CDT (Chicago, UTC -5) / 12:30 p.m. EDT (New York, UTC -4).

Join us for a Zoom Talk with creator and curator Florian Malzacher to debate the upcoming Segal Center publication The Art of Assembly— Political Theatre Today.

The Art of Assembly surveys theatre in the present day to exhibit its political potential in each type and content material. Drawing on quite a few examples from world wide in efficiency, visible arts, and activist artwork, curator and creator Florian Malzacher examines works that draw on the actual potentialities of theatre to navigate the house between illustration and participation, without delay playfully and with sincerity. In a time of wide-ranging disaster, The Art of Assembly is a plea for a robust definition of the political and for a theatre that isn’t content material merely to replicate the world’s ills, however as an alternative acts to alter them.

Florian Malzacher is a curator, author, and dramaturg, in addition to the host of The Art of Assembly, a sequence of talks concerning the potential of gathering in artwork, activism, and politics (since 2021). His present tasks embrace Training for the Future (with Jonas Staal). He was creative director of Impulse Theater Festival in Cologne, Dusseldorf and Mulheim/Ruhr (2013-2017), and co-curator of the multidisciplinary arts pageant steirischer herbst in Graz/Austria (2006-2012). He is (co)creator and (co)editor of quite a few publications on up to date theatre, curating performing arts and the connection between artwork and politics. His texts have been translated into 15 languages.
