Alain Platel is the director of Les Ballet C de la B, which is in reality not a ballet firm, and undoubtedly not your typical dance firm.
Based in Belgium, Alain tells us how he began Les Ballet C de la B accidentally and has during the last 30 years challenged the conventional conventions of dance.
Working with each skilled and non-professional dancers, dwell musicians, and even animals, Alain creates work that makes us query ‘what is dance’, who’s allowed to bounce, what’s a dancer, the place does dance finish and motion start, is theatre dance?
His piece Nicht Schlafen being proven at Sadler’s Wells (30 June and 1 July), is an instance of his radical dance that offers with life and dying. Alain explains the inspiration drawn from Austrian composer Gustav Mahler, political change, uncertainty and social tensions.
With a forged of all males besides one lone feminine dancer, Nicht Schlafen explores the position of males in at present’s society, responding to, as Alain says, the brand new wave of feminism.
Listen to Alain speak about his observations and influences and the significance of the music from composer Steven Prengels in his work.
