Interview: Noise-Rock Band Mold! on New Single “Don’t Wake Me Up!”

Since transferring to Miami from Peru in 2018, Carlo Barbacci has established Mold! and its energetic noise-rock sound as a staple in Miami’s music scene.

What retains Mold! rolling within the current day — apart from the exhausting work of recording music, enjoying and selling exhibits and excursions, and navigating the ever-evolving music scene — is the border-defying friendship of Barbacci and Bronto Montano who additionally transplanted from Peru only a yr earlier than Barbacci. After a short hiatus, Montano rejoined Mold! and now each Peruvians lead the band (each on vocals, Barbacci on guitar/synth, and Montano on bass) alongside drummer Frankie Lujan.

New Times final spoke with Barbacci in 2021 earlier than the discharge of Mold!’s debut album, No Silence!, which set the tone for the band’s noise-rock sound that Barbacci shortly adopted after the chaos of residing in Miami bled into his music.

“Since we final spoke, we have been producing the album that is popping out this yr,” Barbacci shares.

“And I rejoined the band,” Montano provides.

Mold!’s second album, out later this yr, might be a self-titled file made up of ten tracks, together with three in Spanish. Set to launch on Friday, March 24, the primary single, “Don’t Wake Me Up!,” is akin to the band’s traditional noisy rock, this time with distinguished, melodic vocals that give the monitor extra of a pop edge.

“It was a necessity. We’re making a brand new album so we needed to shoot for one thing completely different as a substitute of doing the very same formulation,” Barbacci says.

At Mold!’s reside exhibits, Barbacci and Montano’s vocals are inclined to mix into the loud-as-hell blasting rock (I recommend carrying ear plugs), however “Don’t Wake Me Up!” options vocals and lyrics from Barbacci that sound deliberately combined to be loud and sang alongside to. Still, the vocals are layered over the acquainted intense and fast-paced punk instrumentals that really feel like a painful punch to the face adopted by the invigorating adrenaline rush.

“The entire album seems like a machine gun,” Barbacci declares.

Releasing alongside the only is a music video directed by California photographer David Pelletier who’s directed music movies for New York City-based noise outfit A Place to Bury Strangers. Mold! has performed exhibits in Miami and NYC with Dion Lunadon, a former member of APTBS.

The video was filmed at Barbacci’s house and yard within the suburban neighborhood of Doral Isles and options two protagonists, performed by Barbara Citraro and Julia Beltran. “The entire video was shot actually fast; David was so good,” Montano shares.

It’s a great time to enterprise out to a Mold! present for the reason that band claims they will not play too many gigs in Miami within the upcoming months, aiming to tour exterior of the Magic City as a substitute. The band might be enjoying exhibits in March and April throughout Florida alongside Palomino Blond and Chlorine Fields.

“Don’t Wake Me Up!” is the primary single of many to launch main as much as the band’s album, which has been within the works for nearly two years now.

The single, in addition to many of the album, concerned native musicians and former Mold! members Julian Beltran on guitar and Luis Ledesma on synth. Ryan Haft, who has labored with Mold! and different notable bands reminiscent of Torche, Jacuzzi Boys, Donzii, Jaialai, and Holly Hunt, coproduced the album.

“We make investments so much on this album — not solely cash however personally, I’m investing emotional stability. I’m risking my life right here,” Barbacci says.
