MANILA, Philippines — Instead of offering value-added tax (VAT) refunds for international vacationers, the federal government ought to transfer to repeal regressive taxation insurance policies, in line with a lawmaker from the House of Representatives’ Makabayan bloc.
In a press release on Monday, Alliance of Concerned Teachers Rep. France Castro urged President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. to repeal the VAT and excise taxes on gasoline merchandise, which have pushed costs of fundamental commodities and transportation prices up.
Castro was referring to Marcos’ approval of the VAT Refund Program for international vacationers in 2024 in an effort to draw vacationer influx into the nation.
