About the films – 1969 / 2022

I learn this passage — which is a sort of epilogue to Pauline Kael’s evaluate of Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. It was written in 1969, and what she says appears to resonate with what we’re going via in the present day. For your feedback / consideration (additions in sq. brackets are mine):

Just when there are audiences who could also be prepared for one thing, the studios [or producers] appear to be backing away, as a result of they don’t perceive what these audiences need. The audiences themselves don’t know, however they’re on the lookout for one thing on the films. This transition into the seventies is perhaps probably the most attention-grabbing in addition to probably the most complicated interval in American [or Indian] film historical past, but there’s an actual chance that, as a result of the tastes of the voting viewers are altering so quick, the already tottering studios [or producers] will determine to attenuate dangers and kit manufacturing straight to the sq. viewers and the networks [or OTT].
