“The Woman King,” “Women Talking,” and “She Said” Among AFI’s Best Films of 2022

Hot on the heels of being named Best Film of the Year by the African American Film Critics Association (AAFCA), “The Woman King” has scored one other honor. Gina Prince-Bythewood’s blockbuster about an all-female military of warriors is among the many AFI’s 10 greatest movies of 2022.

Three of 10 movies are directed by girls this 12 months. Joining “The Woman King” are Sarah Polley’s “Women Talking” and Maria Schrader’s “She Said.” The former tells the story of ladies in a distant non secular neighborhood coping with the aftermath of a sequence of sexual assaults, and the latter revisits how New York Times reporters Megan Twohey and Jodi Kantor broke the Harvey Weinstein story and helped impress the #MeToo motion.

“AFI Awards shines a light upon excellence in storytelling and the collaborators who bring these stories to the screen,” stated AFI president and CEO Bob Gazzale. “This year, more than ever, celebrating the community of artists that realize these dreams is particularly meaningful — as they have lifted our spirits through the most challenging of times and proven the power of this great art form.”

The Institute additionally named the perfect tv sequence of 2022, which embody “Abbott Elementary,” Quinta Brunson’s ABC sitcom about public faculty educators. Head over to the Hollywood Reporter to take a look at all of AFI’s movie and TV picks. The AFI will acknowledge honorees in an awards ceremony January 13.
