Stepping into the White Bear Theatre, for The Midnight Snack from comedian ensemble Other Mysteries, I used to be exhausted. My plus one had bailed on me, and I momentarily questioned if I’d be happier if I’d simply stayed at dwelling. Luckily for me, from its first false begin this manufacturing is a sixty-minute whirlwind of chaotic hilarity that left me greater than glad I’d ventured out on that chilly Thursday evening.
With a forged of three actors (plus the characterful voice of Benson MacAllister) madly taking part in twelve (sure, twelve!!!) roles between them, The Midnight Snack serves up the right mixture of absurdity and suspense. Drolly led by Jonah Walsh as Harry Veritas, this podcast turned immersive expertise turned stage present darts from suspect to suspect and motive to motive earlier than culminating in a high-energy whodunnit reveal, impressively carried out by Carolyn Hartvigsen and Mackenzie Larsen. Together the three performers expertly convey this wacky world of meals vehicles, baking, podcasting, suspicion, and homicide to life. One factor’s for positive, director Candice MacAllister actually calls for a variety of her forged, and it’s a thrill to observe them rise to the problem.
Recognition can also be due for the group’s achievement in drawing collectively such an attractive manufacturing on what’s sure to have been a really tight finances. Many greater reveals have executed far much less with much more so it’s extremely refreshing to see so little being utilised so effectively. For starters, Holly Gould’s easy, but enormously efficient, lighting design seamlessly enhances the manufacturing’s slapstick fashion, whereas the stripped-down set provides one other surprising, however very welcome, layer of comedy. Meanwhile, Hartvigsen and Larsen shock and impress as multi-rolers, skilfully turning easy costume add-ons into absolutely developed characters who usually really feel like they’re about to actually soar off the stage. Indeed, it’s a daring (though admittedly very cost-effective) option to have two actors tackle so many roles and though a lesser director might have shied away from making such a choice, MacAllister appears to completely embrace the duty. The result’s a powerful success that feels concurrently nostalgic and recent.
As an ensemble the Other Mysteries group is artistic and compelling, and I actually hope we’ll see much more of them as they proceed to develop and produce extra work. So, if you end up craving some comedy, are in want of quite a lot of good laughs, or are merely simply tired of sixty-minutes to kill, do your self a favour and go see this present. Or, if you happen to’ve missed it this time, why not seize your headphones and settle into the unique podcast?
