At the start of this 12 months, the LA-based rap collective Brockhampton introduced plans to take an “indefinite hiatus.” In that announcement, the group stated that their two units at Coachella could be their final reside exhibits. When they performed Coachella, Brockhampton teased the discharge of a remaining album. That LP is named The Family, and it’s popping out in a few weeks. The first single from The Family has the pleasant title “Big Pussy,” and it’s out now.
“Big Pussy” is a messy, chaotic banger with an lively beat that retains altering. The track opens with jazz samples, and when it kicks in, it has a monster of a bassline — a looped acoustic roll that remembers A Tribe Called Quest, most likely deliberately. Interestingly, “Big Pussy” isn’t a bunch effort. Where most Brockhampton tracks are posse cuts, “Big Pussy” is a solo showcase for group chief Kevin Abstract, who assaults the monitor with an aggressive sense of function that feels new. Check it out beneath.
The Family is out 11/18 on Question Everyting/RCA.
