Yip Kwok Wen, often known as Raymond Yip, of Tiong Bahru Wah Yuen Porridge, has handed on as of 15 Feb 2023. He died peacefully along with his loving relations by his bedside.

To many, Raymond has been known as the pleasant “porridge uncle” or “Uncle Raymond”. To the household, he took on the function of a father and a husband.

To Raymond’s household, we ship our heartfelt condolences to you, as we mourn the dying of his lighthearted spirit that will probably be eternally remembered by all of us.

Most of you may know the stall because the porridge stall at Telok Blangah Food Centre that solely opens twice every week throughout the weekends. For those that have dropped by the stall earlier than, you’d often be greeted first by the grins of the pleasant couple, Sheila and Raymond.

Mr Yip Swee Wah first based the porridge stall in 1956. Shortly after, Raymond, the eldest son, took over and arrange a stall in Telok Blangah in 2005. Since then, the couple has managed the stall and cooked up comforting bowls of Cantonese porridge.

In mid Nov 2022, the aged couple determined to take a break from operating the stall. Running a hawker stall is hard work, to not point out the issue of operating a hawker stall whenever you’re a lot older.

Later in Dec 2022, they posted on their Facebook web page asserting the extension of their break, as they wished to “rest and recuperate”. Tiong Bahru Wah Yuen Porridge has been briefly closed ever since.

They’re identified for having the most effective porridge in Singapore. Dressed with drizzles of sesame oil and soy sauce, a scoop into your bowl will reveal uniquely chunky meatballs. It often breaks into minced items, and it tastes fondly nostalgic and flavourful.

Since Uncle Raymond’s passing, we’re uncertain if the spouse, Sheila, will proceed operating the stall, as no information of everlasting closure has been introduced.
