The LA band Cheekface have a clearly outlined aesthetic: droll, sarcastically indifferent, self-effacing sing-talking from vocalist-guitarist Greg Katz backed by playful, danceable indie rock by Katz, bassist Mandy Tannen, and drummer Mark “Echo” Edwards. We bestowed Album Of The Week honors on final 12 months’s infectiously nervy Too Much To Ask. Today they’ve returned with “The Fringe,” through which Katz builds an ultra-catchy hook out of the phrase, “Success is cringe! Success is cringe! I wanna be on the fringe!”
Katz’s assertion on the track:
Me and Mandy had been attempting to wrestle with the sensation that success in your profession or discipline form of seems like promoting out, even if you happen to don’t assume you’re knowingly capitulating to the calls for of later capitalism. Like, work, or artwork, or no matter, feels by some means extra genuine, or simply higher, if different individuals don’t prefer it, or if you happen to’re failing. And possibly it seems like a badge of honor to simply reject success altogether, and due to that, there’s possibly an impulse to self-sabotage, like, to do issues on function that you already know won’t succeed. Also this track has a pleasant guitar solo for my part, though I’m biased, as a result of I performed it.
