Rick Astley is a singer and songwriter from England, whose debut single, “Never Gonna Give You Up,” grew to become a world smash hit. The track got here out in July 1987 and gained the BRIT Award for “British Single of the Year.” It hit primary in 25 international locations, and Rick Astley was nominated for a Grammy for Best New Artist. And then, 20 years after the track got here out, it grew to become a brand new sort of phenomenon, when the meme Rickrolling was born. Last yr, the music video for “Never Gonna Give You Up” handed a billion streams on YouTube. The track was written and produced by the manufacturing staff Stock Aitken Waterman, who grew to become hitmakers for artists like Kylie Minogue, and others. For this episode, I spoke to Rick Astley, and songwriter and producer Mike Stock, and the 2 of them inform the story of how “Never Gonna Give You Up” was made.
