“Aftersun” continues to burn vivid this awards season. Charlotte Wells’ characteristic debut landed seven wins on the British Independent Film Awards (BIFA), held London in Sunday. “The film won Best British Independent Film, Best Director, Best Screenplay, and The Douglas Hickox Award for Best Debut Director. This evening’s four wins were added to the film’s previously announced haul in the craft categories with three wins including Best Cinematography, Best Editing, and Best Music Supervision,” per Deadline.
Penned by Wells, “Aftersun” sees a girl reflecting on the seaside trip she took together with her father as a pre-teen. Newcomer Frankie Corio and “Normal People” breakout Paul Mescal star.
Three of the 5 titles up for Best British Independent Film have been directed by girls. Joining “Aftersun” was Georgia Oakley’s “Blue Jean,” a portrait of a lesbian instructor compelled to stay a double life, and Sophie Hyde’s “Good Luck to You, Leo Grande,” a dramedy a few retired college instructor who hires a intercourse employee to assist her verify off objects on her sexual bucket listing.
Wells, Oakley, and Hyde accounted for 3 of 5 helmers up for Best Director.
