Yellow Robe Playwright\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> [ad_1]<br \/>\n<\/p>\n<p>Zharia O&#8217;Neal.<\/p>\n<div>\n<p><strong>SEATTLE:<\/strong> <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/soundtheatrecompany.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Sound Theatre<\/a> has named Los Angeles playwright Zharia O\u2019Neal the inaugural recipient of their new Making Waves William S. Yellow Robe Jr. Playwright Residency.\u00a0Chosen out of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.americantheatre.org\/2022\/06\/22\/sound-theatre-seeks-applicants-for-yellow-robe-playwright-residency\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"66355\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">120 candidates from across the nation<\/a>, O\u2019Neal will obtain a $10,000 stipend, journey and housing reimbursement, and Sound Theatre\u2019s in-house assist in growing a brand new play. The residency is known as for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.americantheatre.org\/2021\/08\/09\/bill-yellow-robe-spoke-native-truth-to-white-power\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"60116\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">legendary late Native playwright<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis new residency program will provide an opportunity for the playwright, Sound Theatre\u00a0Company, and our community to focus on how theatremaking can benefit from engaging in\u00a0tough conversations,\u201d mentioned Janet Hayatshahi, incoming professor of performing at Seattle University, in a press release. \u201cZharia is a force. Her dynamism is apparent both in her writing and in how she speaks about creating story. She is driven by ways to articulate stories that look beyond traditional forms, questioning existing values and structures, breaking their rigid edges and allowing in a viewpoint different than the one anticipated.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Through the residency O\u2019Neal will work on <em>Roost<\/em>, a comedy about Black ladies\u2019s expertise and relationship with actuality tv, media illustration, respectability politics, and <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theroot.com\/hotep-explained-1790854506\" target=\"_blank\">hotep-ery<\/a>. The residency will embrace a neighborhood studying that may welcome suggestions in December 2022, and can result in a public staged studying in March 2023. O\u2019Neal can even be educating a playwriting course beginning January 2023 for college kids from underserved communities. which can culminate in a 10-minute play competition. The residency will take a hybrid format with Zoom and in-person occasions positioned in Seattle.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWilliam S. Yellow Robe Jr. spoke in an interview about having to fill cultural knowledge gaps\u00a0and fight Native stereotypes in the development process before he could even begin the\u00a0necessary work on his play,\u201d mentioned O\u2019Neal in a press release. \u201cThat\u2019s the insidiousness of monolithic structures\u2014there\u2019s so much to work through before you can begin your work. Creating diverse,\u00a0culturally informed rooms gives us less to work through before we can get to the work. The\u00a0room around a play builds it, so fill it wisely\u2026The truth is, if you want to develop stories from BIPOC, intersectional playwrights that speak to their dynamic, kaleidoscopic experiences, you cannot require them to be told in a certain manner, shape, and structure that is familiar or comfortable to you\u2014that will \u2018promise ticket sales.&#8217;\u201d<\/p>\n<p>O\u2019Neal is a poet, playwright, and multi-medium storyteller from the British Virgin Islands. She identifies as an Afro-Caribbean Queer playwright. Her works embrace <em>the blood of hibiscus<\/em>, <em>Seven Stage Circle<\/em>, and a poetry assortment, <em>rottincrop<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Finalists for this residency will obtain honoraria, and they&#8217;re Alex Chand of Southlake, Texas, whose pattern, <em>Avonte Oquendo<\/em>, advised the story of a 14-year-old autistic pupil in Queens, N.Y., who went lacking from college in 2013; Zachariah Ezer of Austin, who wrote <em>The Stones of Life<\/em>,<em> <\/em>a courtroom drama about m\u0101h\u016b (a pre-colonial third gender) and the p\u014dpolo (Black Hawaiians) in Nineteen Seventies Honolulu; Kennedy Dawson Healy of Chicago, whose pattern <em>Care <\/em>is a musical about 4 disabled folks and their care employees; and Wind Dell Woods of Tacoma, Wash., whose <em>Aaliyah within the Underland <\/em>is a hip-hop remix\/Black feminist subversion of <em>Alice in Wonderland<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>The Making Waves Yellow Robe residency is being supported by the National Endowment for the Arts, Seattle Office of Economic Development\u2019s Neighborhood Economic Recovery Fund, and the Marie Lamfrom Charitable Foundation.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<div class=\"awac-wrapper\">\n<div class=\"awac widget text-2\">\n<div class=\"textwidget\">\n<p><em><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">Support American Theatre: a simply and thriving theatre ecology begins with data for all.
