<\/figure>\n In the summer time of 1986, Bo Jackson and Kevin Seitzer performed side-by-side on the Memphis Chicks, the Kansas City Double-A farm staff. And though there wasn\u2019t any noticeable animosity, the boys \u2014 now teammates on the 1988 Royals \u2014 shared little in frequent. Unlike Jackson, blessed by the Gods to be an athlete, Seitzer was your prototypical (aka: cliched) scrapper \u2014 the white small-college child (Eastern Illinois) who was drafted pretty late (eleventh spherical), however lived and died within the cage. Also not like Jackson, Seitzer stapled each emotion, feeling and opinion to his brow. During his rookie season, for instance, Seitzer\u2019s hometown of Middletown, Illinois, deliberate on throwing a parade in his honor \u2014 till Seitzer made it clear he didn\u2019t like his hometown of Middletown, Illinois. \u201cI doubt they\u2019ll ever have a Kevin Seitzer day,\u201d he mentioned \u2014 extra risk than response.<\/p>\n Seitzer was brash. Loud. Obnoxious. If you had a whitehead in your nostril, he advised you. If you farted, he was the primary to announce it. \u201cHe was a gnat,\u201d mentioned Danny Tartabull, the outfielder. \u201cYou know, the busy bee in everyone\u2019s conversation. Most guys, before they said something, took the temperature. Not Kevin.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cKevin was annoying,\u201d mentioned Jeff Montgomery, a younger reliever. \u201cNot a bad person. But he pushed things when it was better to walk away.\u201d<\/p>\n Because he largely saved to himself, Jackson may very well be laborious to learn. Were you his pal? Were you not his pal? Sometimes he may very well be heard laughing. Other occasions he flashed the sternness of a decide. His measurement made him intimidating sufficient that uncommon was the Royal who challenged him. \u201cThe only time I actually saw someone stand up to Bo was [pitcher] Steve Farr,\u201d mentioned Montgomery. \u201cBo had been told Steve was talking trash about him and he was mad. But that annoyed Steve. He went straight to Bo and said, \u2018Do you have a problem? If so, let\u2019s go \u2014 me and you.\u2019 Bo could have wrapped Steve up like a pretzel, but he didn\u2019t because he respected Steve holding his ground.\u201d<\/p>\n Bo didn’t, nonetheless, respect Seitzer. \u201cHe\u2019s one of the biggest ass-lickers we\u2019ve got on the team,\u201d Jackson mentioned. \u201cHe always puts his two cents in. And guys are like, \u2018Will you shut the fuck up?\u2019 \u201d<\/p>\n G\/O Media could get a fee<\/p>\n <\/a><\/p>\n A gift for literally everybody.<\/strong> One day, early in the 1988 season, the Royals held pre-game batting practice indoors, at the cages beneath the stadium. The team broke into groups of four, and Jackson\u2019s quartet included Seitzer, catcher Ed Hearn and infielder Bill Pecota. \u201c[Kevin] is at all times the primary within the cage,\u201d Jackson mentioned. \u201cHe has to be the first to hit. So we\u2019re all back there, he takes his hacks, and I look down. I don\u2019t have nothing [on] but my sliding pants.\u201d<\/p>\n Jackson retreated to the clubhouse and threw on his shorts. When he returned, Hearn was wrapping his swings. Spotting Jackson, Seitzer theatrically jumped into the cage.<\/p>\n \u201cExcuse me,\u201d Jackson mentioned, \u201cbut didn\u2019t you just take your fucking turn?\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cWell,\u201d Seitzer mentioned, \u201cyou should have been here . . .\u201d<\/p>\n Three or 4 coaches, in addition to a handful of teammates, have been standing close by. Jackson thought Seitzer was (as at all times) attempting to peacock. \u201cLook, man,\u201d Jackson mentioned, \u201cwill you just shut the fuck up and get out?\u201d<\/p>\n He then entered the cage, the place Seitzer \u2014 inches away \u2014 continued to lecture on protocol. \u201cKevin said to Bo, \u2018Fuck you \u2014 you weren\u2019t here,\u2019\u201d mentioned Brian Watley, a Royals batboy. \u201cSaying \u2018fuck you\u2019 to Bo seemed a little risky.\u201d<\/p>\n Jackson was not blissful.<\/p>\n \u201cLook, you better stop talking at me,\u201d he mentioned.<\/p>\n Seitzer continued to bark.<\/p>\n \u201cThis is my last time telling you,\u201d Jackson mentioned. \u201cDon\u2019t say anything else to me, or I\u2019m going to kick your ass.\u201d<\/p>\n Seitzer exited the cage, Jackson grabbed his Louisville Slugger, stepped in and missed the primary pitch. Seitzer snickered.<\/p>\n Jackson threw down his bat, walked towards Seitzer (\u201cWith fire in his eyes,\u201d Hearn recalled), grabbed him across the throat along with his left hand and shoved his head towards the concrete wall. No one with the Royals had witnessed this quick of a Bo metamorphosis. Within seconds Seitzer\u2019s eyes rolled again.<\/p>\n \u201cLook, you picked the wrong motherfucker to fuck with on the wrong day!\u201d Jackson screamed. \u201cAs long as you\u2019re breathing air, don\u2019t you ever talk to me like that again! Motherfucker, I will break your neck!\u201d<\/p>\n Dating again to his boyhood in Bessemer, Alabama, Jackson\u2019s philosophy on allotting an ass-kicking was pretty easy: If anybody steps in to finish the ass-kicking, the ass-kicking intensifies. As a number of of the coaches and gamers tried separating the combatants, Jackson\u2019s grip grew vise-like.<\/p>\n \u201cBo!\u201d screamed Bob Schaefer, the first-base coach. \u201cBo! Bo! Let him go! Bo!\u201d<\/p>\n Jackson wasn\u2019t listening. He was overcome by rage. Too a lot Kevin Seitzer. His arms, Schaefer recalled, appeared to be rising in thickness by the second. The veins bulged from his left bicep.<\/p>\n \u201cThe harder I squeezed, his eyes rolled back in his head,\u201d Jackson mentioned. \u201cAnd the harder they pulled on me, the stiffer my arm got.\u201d<\/p>\n By now Seitzer\u2019s toes have been off the bottom. His face was purplish-blue.<\/p>\n \u201cIt was like a horror movie,\u201d mentioned Tartabull. \u201cBo was Jason in Friday the 13th, and Kevin was the camp kid about to be murdered.\u201d<\/p>\n Finally, after what felt like an hour, Jackson launched his maintain, dropped Seitzer to the ground and stormed again to his locker. He picked up a bat and swung on the nearest wall. Wood and plaster exploded into little chunks.<\/p>\n Seitzer, in the meantime, was escorted to the coaching room, the place he rested with an ice pack affixed to his neck. A nonetheless steaming Jackson rose from his stool and entered the room \u2014 adopted by a half dozen curious\/terrified\/ wildly entertained teammates. Jackson stood over the battered Seitzer.<\/p>\n \u201cDon\u2019t you ever cross me again,\u201d he lectured. \u201cIf you do, I am not going to give those coaches time enough to grab me. I\u2019m going to rip your asshole, and I mean that from the bottom of my heart. Don\u2019t you ever cross me again.\u201d<\/p>\n Seitzer nodded. About a half hour later, he tiptoed as much as Jackson. The cocksureness was gone. \u201cBo,\u201d he mentioned, \u201ccan we just forget what happened back there and be buddies?\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cNo,\u201d Jackson mentioned. \u201cThe shit don\u2019t work that way. You have said what you want to say, and you mean it, but now you want to come back and ass lick with me and say you\u2019re sorry? No.\u201d<\/p>\n Years later, Seitzer referred to Jackson as \u201ca very good teammate, but not someone I knew that well.
