Alan Cumming<\/strong> not needs to be an Officer of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire!<\/p>\n

In case you didn\u2019t know, The<\/em> Good Wife<\/em> alum was awarded the OBE<\/strong> in 2009 as a part of Queen Elizabeth II<\/strong>\u2019s birthday honors checklist for his work as an actor and LGBTQ+ rights activist. But 14 years later, Alan revealed there was \u201csomething I recently did for myself\u201d to mark his 58th birthday \u2013 he returned the celebrated award! Why is that? He shared on Instagram<\/strong> Friday that he needs to distance himself from the \u201ctoxicity\u201d of the British Empire. Alongside two footage of himself, together with a snapshot that featured him carrying the OBE medal, Alan mentioned within the caption:<\/p>\n

\u201cFourteen years ago, I was incredibly grateful to receive it in the 2009 Queen\u2019s birthday honours list, for it was awarded not just for my job as an actor but \u2018for activism for equal rights for the gay and lesbian community, USA\u2019. Back then the Defence of Marriage Act ensured that same sex couples couldn\u2019t get married or enjoy the same basic legal rights as straight people, and Don\u2019t Ask, Don\u2019t Tell ensured that openly gay, lesbian or bisexual people were barred from serving in the military. (Incidentally both these policies were instituted by the Clinton administration).\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

The Traitors<\/em> host went on to clarify how the queen\u2019s loss of life in September dropped at gentle \u201cconversations about the role of monarchy and especially the way the British Empire profited at the expense (and death) of indigenous peoples across the world,\u201d noting that the brand new data \u201copened my eyes.\u201d He continued:<\/p>\n

\u201cAlso, thankfully, times and laws in the US have changed, and the great good the award brought to the LGBTQ+ cause back in 2009 is now less potent than the misgivings I have being associated with the toxicity of empire. So I returned my award, explained my reasons and reiterated my great gratitude for being given it in the first place.
