Drummer and composer Kendrick Scott<\/a> <\/strong>has introduced the March 3 launch of Corridors<\/em>, his third album for Blue Note Records, and first compositional remedy for the saxophone, bass, and drums trio.<\/p>\n

The follow-up to A Wall Becomes A Bridge<\/em>, Scott\u2019s much-lauded 2019 launch together with his band Oracle, Corridors<\/em> unveils an uncovered rumination from the Houston-born artist and his acclaimed collaborators: saxophonist Walter Smith III and bassist Reuben Rogers. The lead single \u201cWhat Day Is It?\u201d is out now and the album is obtainable for pre-order on vinyl, CD, and digital.<\/p>\n

Originally commissioned by Rio Sakairi for The Jazz Gallery\u2019s 2020 Artist Fellowship Series, Corridors<\/em> options eight authentic compositions and one new association of a beloved tune from the Bobby Hutcherson canon (\u201cIsn\u2019t This My Sound Around Me?\u201d). Born through the pandemic lockdown, the report focuses on posing outward questions as a substitute of inward contemplation. \u201cI often write about something that I\u2019m going through,\u201d says Scott, \u201cbut for this record I wanted to zoom out from my perspective and instead, try to deal with everyone\u2019s. The pandemic forced everyone to deal with the shadows they had been running from.\u201d<\/p>\n

Corridors displays a shared intimacy and spotlights a unique side of Scott\u2019s expression within the pared down trio setting. A conceptual query emerged round loss: \u201cWhat was taken away from everybody? What did you lose?\u201d For Scott, who serves as album producer, this query grew to become the impetus for assembling the album\u2019s instrumentation. To create a really empathetic musical gesture, he selected to desert what he loves most: \u201cIn my band Oracle, it\u2019s pretty much built around the guitar and the piano. I thought what I could do in aural form is take away those two instruments.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cOne of my strengths is creating a harmonic space for groups,\u201d says Scott, \u201cAnd the trio afforded me even more space so I too could be freer to interpret all the layers. Reuben navigates the world in such a genuine and loving way and his playing is a reflection of that. He\u2019s the glue element \u2014 grounding and uplifting. And Walter has this sound that\u2019s always been so beautiful and inspiring to me. Of my peers, Walter\u2019s always been a guiding light.\u201d<\/p>\n
