\u201cI\u2019m damaged, and in a way you\u2019re not \u2014 at least you don\u2019t have to be,\u201d a P.E. instructor tells her scholar in a brand new trailer for \u201cBlue Jean.\u201d Written and directed by Georgia Oakley, the drama is ready in 1988 England and tells the story of Jean (Rosy McEwen), a lesbian who resides a double life. A brand new regulation launched by Margaret Thatcher\u2019s authorities, Section 28, seeks to cease faculties and native governments from \u201cpromoting homosexuality\u201d by making it unlawful.<\/p>\n

When Jean runs into certainly one of her college students (Lucy Halliday) at a homosexual bar, she goes into disaster, seemingly torn between the will to avoid wasting her job and to be a help system to the teenager. \u201cWhat kind of example are you setting for her?\u201d Jean\u2019s girlfriend (Kerrie Hayes) asks. A defensive Jean explains that she doesn\u2019t really feel the necessity to \u201d parade [her] sexuality round like a badge of honor.\u201d<\/p>\n

Asked what drew her to this story, Oakley instructed us<\/a>, \u201cI read an article about a group of lesbians who had abseiled, in early 1988, into the House of Lords from the public gallery during a debate on Section 28. And I was struck by this amazing image, and what might have led up to this event, historically. But I was also amazed that I\u2019d never heard about this law, despite the fact that it wasn\u2019t repealed till 2003. I started thinking about the impact it would have had on gay teachers, but also the indelible mark it had left on my life, without my knowing of its existence,\u201d she defined.<\/p>\n

\u201cBlue Jean\u201d made its world premiere eventually yr\u2019s Venice Film Festival. It hits cinemas in England February 10. No phrase on a U.S. launch date but.<\/p>\n
