Rick Rubin<\/a><\/strong> was featured on 60 Minutes<\/em> to help his new ebook The Creative Act: A Way Of Being<\/em>. In on-line excerpts of his interview with Anderson Cooper, the icon producer shared some recollections of working with Johnny Cash<\/a><\/strong> and LL Cool J<\/a><\/strong>, along with turning his NYU dorm room into Def Jam\u2019s workplace and recording studio.<\/p>\n Regarding his course of, Rubin stated, \u201cWe\u2019re trying to tap into a feeling. We\u2019re trying to tap into something that makes you wanna lean forward and pay more attention.\u201d<\/p>\n Back in October, Rick Rubin was interviewed<\/a><\/strong> by Lauren Larverne for BBC Radio\u2019s \u201cDesert Island Discs\u201d present, and through their chat he revealed how he acquired Johnny Cash to document Nine Inch Nails\u2019 \u201cHurt\u201d for his 2002 farewell album, American IV: The Man Comes Around<\/em>.<\/p>\n According to Rubin, when he first urged the duvet, \u201cJohnny looked at me like I was insane.\u201d He provides, \u201cThe Nine Inch Nails version of the song is very noisy, aggressive. Johnny was wary,\u201d Rubin stated, although Cash would agree ultimately. \u201cI think I did a demo where I had a guitar player play it, and I said the words the way I imagined [Johnny] saying it, and then when he heard the lyrics, and he heard the format of what it could be, he said, \u2018Let\u2019s try it.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n Later within the dialog, Rubin added, \u201cI thought of the image of Johnny Cash as the mythical Man in Black, and any song he sang had to suit this mythical Man in Black. And one of the ones that seemed to have resonated with people after we did it was \u2018Hurt.\u2019 If you listen to the words, it\u2019s like looking back over a life of regret and remorse.\u201d<\/p>\n For his half, Nine Inch Nails\u2019 Trent Reznor<\/a><\/strong> was additionally as skeptical of the concepts as Johnny Cash was. He recounted the story to Alternative Press<\/em><\/a><\/strong> in 2004. \u201cRick Rubin has been a friend for a long time, and he called me asking how I felt about Johnny covering \u2018Hurt.\u2019 I was flattered, but frankly, the idea sounded a bit gimmicky to me. \u2026 A few weeks later, a CD shows up with the track. \u2026 It sounded\u2026 weird to me. That song in particular was straight from my soul, and it felt very strange hearing the highly identifiable voice of Johnny Cash singing it.\u201d Once Reznor noticed the video, nonetheless, he was satisfied of the brand new model\u2019s energy.<\/p>\n
