The late collaborators and married couple \u201cexplored African American cultural life in a series of highly acclaimed documentaries,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/2023\/01\/camille-billops-james-hatch-theatrical-retrospective-announcement-third-world-releasing-news-1235214631\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">per Deadline.\u00a0<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Third World Newsreel will launch the retrospective February 3 on the Brooklyn Academy of Music. It features a 4K restoration of 1982\u2019s \u201cSuzanne, Suzanne,\u201d and \u201c2K digitizations of their five succeeding films, culminating with their last film together, 2002\u2019s \u2018A String of Pearls.&#8217;\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCentering Black cultural life and storytelling on screen, these autobiographical films innovate documentary form and artfully weave together personal histories and social issues,\u201d a launch from Third World Newsreel emphasizes. \u201cOutrageous and committed, Camille Billops and James Hatch challenged the white art establishment, promoted other Black and POC artists, and produced years of interviews in video and books to highlight BIPOC creatives,\u201d the discharge notes. \u201cAs Camille put it, \u2018Who else will do it?\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Named to the National Film Registry of the Library of Congress in 2016, 1982\u2019s \u201cSuzanne, Suzanne\u201d spotlights Billop\u2019s niece and sees her reflecting on her experiences with abuse. In 1991\u2019s \u201cFinding Christa,\u201d Billops reunites with the daughter she gave up for adoption. \u201cThe KKK Boutique ain\u2019t Just Rednecks,\u201d launched in 1994, explores racial discrimination inside the United States.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe work of Camille Billops and James Hatch defiantly challenges documentary norms and is a revelatory experience of their lives, Black families, and all families \u2013 while forcing viewers to rethink their assumptions of motherhood, older sexuality, domestic violence, race, and gender roles. This is the first time that their work is being released in a theatrical retrospective \u2013 and we hope that new audiences will be entranced by their work \u2013 and through this, led to the work of other BIPOC documentary filmmakers as well,\u201d stated Third World Newsreel govt director J.T.
