Sloan Athena List Development Grant for her Athena List-winning script \u201cThe Gatekeeper.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Gatekeeper\u201d is a historic drama primarily based on the story of Frances Kelsey, an FDA medical reviewer who fought a significant pharmaceutical agency to maintain the drug thalidomide off the American market within the early Sixties. The script relies on \u201cWonder Drug,\u201d Vanderbes\u2019 personal non-fiction guide, which was additionally supported by the Sloan Foundation. The guide can be printed by Random House in June 2023.<\/p>\n<p>Vanderbes will obtain $20,000 to assist advance her script to the subsequent stage of growth. The fest will host a reception and dwell script-reading December 7 at Barnard College in New York City.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSupport from the Athena Film Festival\u2019s Sloan Foundation Development Grant will help bring to the screen this important STEM story about the largest drug scandal of the 20th century,\u201d mentioned Vanderbes. \u201cFrances Kelsey was a unicorn of her day \u2013 a woman who held both a Ph.D. in Pharmacology and an M.D. She spent years battling government bureaucracy and corporate interests to keep thalidomide off the American market, and her scientific brilliance, moral integrity, and personal pluck make her a fabulous heroine, ripe for the screen, as the centerpiece of an epic battle against Big Pharma.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Finalists for the 2022 Alfred P. Sloan Athena List Development grant included \u201cRay of Life\u201d by Kate Sheffield and \u201cTidal Disruption\u201d by Kiran Deol.<\/p>\n<p>AFF\u2019s partnership with the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation goals to bolster the pipeline of girls filmmakers working to focus on the significance of girls within the sciences.<\/p>\n<p>Doron Weber, Vice President and Program Director on the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation, commented,\u00a0\u201cWe are thrilled to partner with the Athena Film Festival to announce the third annual winner of the Alfred P.
