John Leguizamo has criticised the \u201cbackwards\u201d casting in The Super Mario Bros. Movie<\/em>.<\/p>\n The actor, who performed Luigi within the 1993 live-action movie Super Mario Bros.<\/em> reverse Bob Hoskins\u2019 Mario, shared his ideas on the casting within the upcoming animated movie from Illumination (Despicable Me<\/em>). In the movie, Mario and Luigi are voiced by Chris Pratt<\/a> and Charlie Day respectively, who’re each not of Italian descent.<\/p>\n Speaking to IndieWire<\/em><\/a> on the premiere of The Menu<\/em>, Leguizamo stated: \u201cI\u2019m O.G. A lot of people love the original. I did Comic-Con in New York and in Baltimore, and everyone\u2019s like, \u2018No, no, we love the old one, the original.\u2019 They\u2019re not feeling the new one.\u201d<\/p>\n When discussing Pratt and Day\u2019s casting, Leguizamo highlighted the efforts taken by administrators of the 1993 movie, Annabel Jankel and Rocky Morton, in casting him as Luigi.<\/p>\n \u201cThe directors Annabel Jankel and Rocky Morton fought really hard for me to be the lead because I was a Latin man, and they [the studio] didn\u2019t want me to be the lead,\u201d he stated. \u201cThey fought really hard, and it was such a breakthrough.
