For the streaming services, daylight hours suddenly shorten in the Northern Hemisphere, the distance between living-room couch and screen shrinks, and all the major platforms tee off on their biggest gambles of the year. This November is special: Netflix will try to bolster the platform’s dominance in the original content market with spy thrillers and cryptocurrency scandals, Disney+ and Hulu rely on Percy Jackson, and HBO Max is dumping its Christmas classics to hedge against the uncertainty of new series. Meanwhile, between Apple and Peacock, a quietly escalating arms race is under way over movie stars descending to television.

Netflix: Breadth of Genre and Depth of Controversy

At the top of the queue is the second season of the British spy thriller Black Doves, with Keira Knightley in the lead role. The first season earned good reviews with its cold, rainy London atmosphere and its tangled political intrigues; in the second, the contrast between the public image of Helen (Knightley) as the prime minister’s wife and her secret life as a spy is deepened. But the true curiosity of the second half of the month is the speed with which the streaming company is responding to “controversial” events. The November 19 premiere of The Altruists tells the story of the collapse of the FTX exchange, with Julia Garner as Caroline Ellison and Anthony Boyle as Sam Bankman-Fried, attempting to re-create this financial scam and love affair of a generation dubbed the “Bonnie and Clyde” of Gen Z. The timing is part of the streamer’s precise positioning in the true-crime genre, as throwing out morally ambiguous complex characters on the eve of awards season is a habitual strategy for streamers to generate buzz.

On November 13 comes the country-music film Heartland, starring Jessica Chastain as a country music star who has retreated from the public eye, forced to return to Nashville when her niece goes missing, and thus confronted with the past she ran away from. Country music films are a rarity on streaming services, and Chastain’s track record of choosing dark-tinged heroines suggests that this combination has merit. And on November 20, there will be the animated musical comedy Steps, which, in putting its emphasis on Cinderella’s wicked stepsister Lilith’s theft of the Fairy Godmother’s wand, is a kind of postmodern deconstruction of the original fairy tale, cleverly timed to come out as people are still talking about Wicked.

DISNEY+ AND HULU: The Flagship of Youth Fantasy, the Gamble of Mature Comedy.

On November 20, the third season of Percy Jackson and the Olympians will be released, with two new episodes, and the season adapts The Titan’s Curse from the original book series. The first season of the show was both a critical success and a commercial success, and it showed that after the success of Harry Potter, they still have the power to create a new fantasy universe for children. In addition, on the same day, a companion podcast for Percy Jackson launches, which reflects the intent of the studio to turn a single program into a cross-media content ecosystem.

November carries a certain recklessness, as if you know tigers live in the mountains. Returning on the 4th is season 2 of Ryan Murphy’s All’s Fair: Kim Kardashian, Naomi Watts, Glenn Close, and the likes of them play a posse of powerful divorce lawyers. The first season was panned by critics as one of the worst TV shows of all time; but it was that notoriety that helped get a lot of people to watch. Being talked about is a form of attention, and Hulu is clearly betting on that logic: mocking while pressing play, and for the purposes of the algorithms, only the watch-time counts. The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives: Orange County comes out on the 12th as a spin-off that moves the lens from Utah to California’s conservative wealthy enclaves, and is essentially a test of whether the “Mormon wives” franchise can exist outside of its original geographic context.

HBO Max: Fighting a Defensive Battle with Christmas Classics

The strategy of HBO Max is entirely different from that of its competitors: instead of betting on a new series, it has made available from November 1 a whole range of holiday-themed classics, including Elf, The Polar Express, National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation and A Christmas Story. This is a typical example of defensive scheduling: once viewers enter indiscriminate viewing mode after Thanksgiving, they can always turn to the familiar and relaxing world of HBO Max and know exactly what to expect. For retention, this sort of “background content” is disproportionately important.

On the new-content front, the film Tony, a biopic about Anthony Bourdain, will be released on November 20, with Dominic Sessa playing the young Bourdain. The complexity of Bourdain as a cultural symbol (chef, writer, traveler, suicide) means that any cinematic version of him is subject to the risk of oversimplification, but the involvement of A24, as well as Zero Point Zero, the company with which he worked in life, at least lends some weight. And finally, also on November 1, the fourth season of The Gilded Age returns, bringing us to late nineteenth-century New York, where the old vs. new money battles will be waged, which is a great story with stunning costumes and set design. For people who enjoy slow pacing, highly nuanced dialogue and interior scenes, it is one of the rare “premium dramas” that we have in November.

Amazon Prime Video and Apple TV+: The Headlong Rush for High-Concept and Stars

Amazon Prime’s most attention-grabbing entry in November is certainly Blade Runner 2099 (on November 25), a limited series set fifty years after Blade Runner 2049 and featuring Michelle Yeoh and Hunter Schafer, the first official expansion of Ridley Scott’s science-fiction universe to the small screen. The risks are obvious: Ridley Scott’s visual language clashes with the accelerated production cycle of streaming, and the box-office flops of the Blade Runner series seem to indicate a very limited audience. On the other hand, this being Michelle Yeoh’s first major series project after her Oscar success, it is itself a topical issue.

Apple continues its “big star limited series” strategy with 12, coming to Apple TV+ on November 13, a crime thriller starring Anthony Mackie and Jamie Dornan as an ex-FBI agent and a career criminal on the run across Europe in the lead-up to a heist in a Zurich underground vault. The format is quite clever: each episode spans three time periods, twelve months of planning, twelve hours of the robbery, and twelve days afterwards, and if well written and performed, this could well be the most intriguing thriller of the season. Also released on the same day is Being Heumann, directed by CODA director Siân Heder and based on the life of the disability rights activist Judith Heumann, with Ruth Madeley starring and Mark Ruffalo as a government official. In releasing a biopic with such overtly political overtones, just before the start of the award season, it is clear what Apple’s intentions are.

Peacock: One Limited Series’ All-In Bet

Peacock’s November is mainly built on The Good Daughter, a six-episode limited series with all episodes dropping at once on November 12, adapted from Karin Slaughter’s bestselling novel, with the author herself serving as showrunner. Rose Byrne and Meghann Fahy play sisters whose mother was murdered and family destroyed by an act of violence twenty years earlier. They are forced to face the past again when a new case eerily similar to the one that destroyed their family emerges. Brendan Gleeson plays their father, a defense attorney, and Olivia Williams plays the murdered mother. In a world where growth in subscriptions is fading, a high-quality series of such a short duration, starring such prestigious actresses, is the best way for Peacock to stay relevant against its competition.

Conclusion: November No Longer Belongs to Any Single Show

If one word is needed to describe the streaming landscape of November 2026, “fragmented” would probably be the most fitting. No single series has the monopoly on public attention the way last year’s Wednesday or the previous year’s Stranger Things did; instead, the platforms are dividing up into niches, each with its own specialty. Netflix covers the adult crowd’s varied tastes with financial scandals and country music. Disney+ holds the youth fantasy base, HBO Max relies on a low-cost Christmas inventory, and Apple and Peacock bet on the smoldering glow of the awards season with limited series starring the biggest stars. For consumers, this isn’t necessarily a bad thing; if there is no single “must-see,” you can make up your own mind, pick out one of these from the catalogue that suits your tastes, on whichever cold evening strikes your fancy, and not be sucked into watching it by a sweeping tide of social-media chatter. After all, the promise of streaming was never to produce agreement, but to let each one of us find his or her own little piece of the screen.

🎬
