On Sunday night, Metallica had delivered a masterclass in heavy metal, their signature blend of blistering riffs and raw, unadulterated power shaking the Welsh capital to its foundations. Fans clad in faded vintage tour shirts, some bearing the wear of decades of devotion, streamed out into the Cardiff night, their ears ringing with the echoes of “Enter Sandman” and “Nothing Else Matters”.
But as the last of the pyrotechnics cooled, the true thunder of the evening was yet to be heard, not from the stage but from the quiet, desperate corners of a city struggling in silence.
Just days before the legendary band took to the stage, the Cardiff Foodbank had issued a chilling plea on social media. Their warehouse shelves were bare. They had never seen them so empty, and they were “very worried”. The boxes that usually lined the aisles, holding the promise of a meal for families in crisis, had all but vanished.
Rachel Biggs, the CEO of Cardiff Foodbank, had been steeling herself for another bleak month. Food donations were down by 27%, demand remained unrelenting, and the cost-of-living crisis continued to tighten its grip on the community. Then, an email arrived that seemed too good to be true.
“I had an email saying ‘This isn’t a scam, please get in touch with the foundation’,” Biggs recounted to the BBC. “They said, ‘We are going to donate £20,000 to you'”.
Through its charitable foundation, All Within My Hands, Metallica had stepped in.
The irony is quietly poetic, a band so often linked with dark themes and brooding intensity turning into a light for a city in need. It wasn’t just a generous gesture; it was a lifeline. The donation, enough to provide approximately 9,000 meals or support 1,000 people, will replenish those empty shelves and buy the charity precious “breathing space”.
“My first thought was that we were being pranked,” a volunteer had joked, reflecting on the initial disbelief. “You don’t expect a metal band, a band that essentially built its legend on songs like ‘Master of Puppets,’ to be the ones filling our pantry.”
This is the nostalgia that the story carries. It’s not the nostalgia of the first time you heard “Ride the Lightning” on a crackly cassette tape or the summer you wore out your Black Album CD. It’s a deeper nostalgia for a time before cynicism set in, a time when rock ‘n’ roll felt like a force that could actually change the world.
Metallica, who just days earlier had charmed Glasgow by playing a cover of The Proclaimers’ “I’m Gonna Be (500 Miles)” and Dublin with “Dirty Old Town,” are proving that their connection to the cities they visit is more than just a pitstop for a sell-out concert. They are showing that they “belong”.
“We had never seen the warehouse so empty,” Biggs emphasized. “It’s an incredible amount of money which will make such a difference”.
The donation does more than fill a warehouse; it restores hope in a city that has been rocked by the continuous waves of the cost-of-living crisis. Last year alone, the Cardiff Foodbank supported 20,000 people, a staggering one-third of whom were children. This isn’t a tale of a charity just scraping by; it’s a story of a community under siege, and four heavy metal legends who decided to man the front lines.
Cardiff Foodbank described this as their “largest celebrity donation”. It even surpasses the generosity of pop superstar Taylor Swift, who donated to the same cause in 2024. It stands as a strong reminder that when the music stops, what truly matters is the silence you leave behind, or in this case, the noise you create for change.
“Metallica are mobilising their fans, mobilising the local community,” Biggs added.
It’s a mobilization that began with an email and will culminate in the echoing sound of boxes being stacked back onto those empty shelves, a rhythm sweeter than any guitar riff.
Ahead of the gig, Metallica had also partnered with the Welsh Blood Service to encourage fans to donate blood and plasma. In a world so often divided, this is a band using its colossal platform to build bridges, to feed the hungry, and to save lives.
So, the next time the city of Cardiff feels the weight of its troubles, there will be a reminder that even in the dark, the metal flame flickers brightest. And for a moment, thanks to Metallica, the city is no longer hungry. It’s just heavy metal.

BY TOM JOHNSON

The roar of the crowd had barely faded from the Principality Stadium.
