And then something extraordinary happens.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Auctioneer Adrien Meyer<\/a> starts counting in $1 million increments<\/a> \u2013 barely above a whisper, like he\u2019s sharing a secret about your neighbour\u2019s cat. Three specialists on telephones. Two bidders in the room<\/a>. Over 60 bids<\/a>. The whole thing lasts seven minutes<\/a>. The previous record for a Pollock at auction was $61.2 million<\/a> back in 2021. So this isn\u2019t just a record. It\u2019s a three-times-the-previous-record, blow-the-doors-off, make-the-art-world-choke-on-its-champagne kind of moment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And the buyer? No one knows<\/a>. A mystery bidder represented by Christie\u2019s global president Alex Rotter<\/a>. Swiss mega-dealer Iwan Wirth<\/a> was apparently an underbidder, possibly bidding for Laurene Powell Jobs<\/a> (yes, that<\/em> Jobs). But the winner? A ghost. A shadow. Someone with $181 million and a very, very large wall.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Welcome to the glorious absurdity of the art world, where drips are worth more than houses, and the only thing more abstract than the painting is the person buying it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Painting Itself (Or: What Exactly Are You Paying For?)<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Let\u2019s get specific. Number 7A, 1948<\/a> is an oil and enamel painting on raw canvas. It measures 3.34 metres long<\/a> and 89 centimetres high<\/a> \u2013 roughly the size of a very long kitchen counter, if your kitchen counter was worth more than Beyonc\u00e9\u2019s entire back catalogue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Black paint is swooped, swirled, poured and drizzled<\/a> across the canvas. There are touches of red. That\u2019s it. That\u2019s the painting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But here\u2019s the twist that art historians will remind you about while you\u2019re trying to eat your canap\u00e9s: Christie\u2019s calls it \u201cone of the first truly abstract paintings in the history of art\u201d<\/a>. \u201cWith this work, Pollock finally frees himself from the shackles of conventional easel painting,\u201d<\/a> the auction house said in a statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Apparently, the shackles of conventional easel painting look an awful lot like \u201cnot throwing paint at the floor.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pollock painted this when he was 36 years old<\/a>, inside the barn at his Long Island home<\/a>, near East Hampton. He died in a car crash in 1956 at the tragically young age of 44, which, coincidentally, is also the age at which most people give up trying to understand modern art and just nod politely.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Previous Owner (Or: Where Did This Thing Come From?)<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

This painting didn\u2019t just fall out of a skip. It has provenance<\/em>. That\u2019s a fancy art-world word for \u201ca very impressive receipt trail.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Number 7A was originally gifted by Pollock to photographer Herber Matter<\/a>. It then passed to collectors Kimiko and John Powers<\/a>. Then, in 1977, it was sold to S.I. Newhouse<\/a> \u2013 the American media titan who co-owned Cond\u00e9 Nast, the publishing empire behind Vogue, The New Yorker, and approximately every magazine your dentist\u2019s waiting room has ever offered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Newhouse died in 2017<\/a>. His family reportedly spent as much as $700 million on their art collection<\/a> over the years. They called in art adviser Tobias Meyer<\/a> \u2013 previously the principal auctioneer at Sotheby\u2019s \u2013 to help decide the collection\u2019s fate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The painting hadn\u2019t been seen by the public since 1977 at the Whitney Museum<\/a>. That\u2019s nearly 50 years hidden away in a private collection. Half a century of no one seeing it, no one arguing about it, no one saying \u201cI could do that\u201d while standing too close to it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Until now.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Auction Itself (Or: How to Spend a Billion Dollars in One Evening)<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Here\u2019s where it gets properly silly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Pollock wasn\u2019t the only thing for sale. It was the centrepiece of the Masterpieces: The Private Collection of S.I. Newhouse<\/a> sale \u2013 16 lots of modern art<\/a> that included works by Br\u00e2ncu\u0219i, Rothko, Mir\u00f3, Warhol, Mondrian, and Picasso.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Br\u00e2ncu\u0219i sculpture, Dana\u00efde, sold for 107.6million]<\/a>. A Mir\u00f3 sold for $27.5 million<\/a>.The total for the night? 631million]<\/a> But wait \u2013 there\u2019s more. Because Christie\u2019s also held a 20th Century Evening Sale immediately afterwards<\/a>. Combined total for the evening? 1.12<\/a> billion<\/a>. 97% sold by lot<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That\u2019s billion with a B. In one evening. On a Monday. Nearly 20,000 people showed up for the 10-day public exhibition beforehand<\/a>, just to catch a glimpse of the drips.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Newhouse collection has now cumulatively sold for more than $1 billion<\/a> across sales in 2018, 2019, 2023, and this week<\/a>. Only one other collection in history \u2013 Paul Allen\u2019s<\/a> \u2013 has ever crossed the billion-dollar mark at auction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So when you hear \u201cart market,\u201d don\u2019t think of beret-wearing bohemians sipping absinthe. Think of a financial instrument shaped like a painting. With drips.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Why Is This Painting Worth $181 Million? (The Boring Answer)<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Fine. You want the serious bit? Here it is.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Number 7A is the largest Pollock drip painting still in private hands<\/a>. Or you\u2019re just buying drips. Honestly, who can tell anymore.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Fourth Most Expensive Painting Ever (And Who\u2019s Ahead)<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

According to ARTnews<\/a>, Number 7A is now the fourth most expensive artwork ever sold at auction<\/a>. Let\u2019s look at the leaderboard, shall we?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1. Salvator Mundi by Leonardo da Vinci<\/strong> \u2013 $450.3 million (2017). Attribution debated, restoration controversial, currently somewhere in a Saudi Arabian palace, probably gathering dust.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2. Shot Sage Blue Marilyn by Andy Warhol<\/strong> \u2013 $195 million (2022). The one with the oddly confident smile and the even stranger price tag.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

3. Le Portrait de l\u2019artiste sans barbe by Vincent van Gogh<\/strong> \u2013 Possibly? The exact rankings shift depending on who you ask and whether you adjust for inflation. But the top three are all in the $180\u2013450 million range.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

4. Number 7A, 1948 by Jackson Pollock<\/strong> \u2013 $181.2 million. Fresh entry. Welcome to the club, drips.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So Pollock is rubbing shoulders with Leonardo, Warhol, and Van Gogh. Not bad for a man who painted on his barn floor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The \u201cMy Toddler Could Do That\u201d Debate (Let\u2019s Settle This)<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Oh, you were thinking it. Go on, admit it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Here\u2019s the thing. Your toddler could not do this. Not because your toddler lacks artistic talent \u2013 though let\u2019s be honest, finger painting is not abstract expressionism. But because your toddler lacks the context, the intentionality, and the sheer audacity to break \u201cthe shackles of conventional easel painting\u201d<\/a> at a moment when everyone thought easels were quite nice, actually.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Look. I\u2019m not going to pretend that $181 million for drips isn\u2019t completely, utterly, gloriously bonkers. It is. The whole situation is absurd. We\u2019ve created a world where a canvas of splattered paint is worth more than most people\u2019s entire neighbourhoods, and we\u2019ve convinced ourselves that this is normal because of something called \u201cprovenance\u201d and a man named S.I. Newhouse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But here\u2019s the thing: it\u2019s also fascinating.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Number 7A represents a moment \u2013 1948, a barn in Long Island, a man who decided that painting didn\u2019t have to mean what everyone thought it meant. It\u2019s not about the drips. It\u2019s about permission. Permission to try something new. Permission to fail gloriously. Permission to ignore the rules and see what happens.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And if that\u2019s not worth $181 million, I don\u2019t know what is.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
