I\u2019ve been doing\u00a0Outlander<\/em>\u00a0for 11 years, and obviously it was brilliant, but I wanted something else,\u201d says Heughan. \u201cAnd I went to the RSC to see Edward II <\/em>there, and I just felt that buzz. I sat in the auditorium and I felt that excitement, sort of the churn in my stomach as the lights went down and I was like, \u2018Yeah, this is the drug I\u2019m looking for.\u2019 And it\u2019s terrifying. And I think that\u2019s a good thing to be scared again.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\tThe final time Heughan was on stage was in\u00a0Batman Live<\/em>,\u00a0the place he performed the Caped Crusader in uncomfortably comfortable tights.<\/p>\n\n\tHe says the present \u201cwas not quite Shakespeare or the RSC, but it was an international tour going all around from the whole of UK and Europe to the U.S. We did Las Vegas, we played in Bueno Aires and the O2\u00a0in London hanging upside down, wearing PVC.\u201d<\/p>\n
\n\tMerrily, he quips: \u201cI dunno, maybe there\u2019ll be a bit of that in\u00a0Macbeth<\/em>\u00a0as well. You never know.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\tCompleting work on the\u00a0Outlander<\/em>\u00a0sequence introduced the proper alternative for the actor to return to his stage roots.<\/p>\n\n\t\u201cI think that\u2019s it,\u201d he agrees. <\/p>\n
\n\tThe actor skilled on the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama, now known as the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland. \u201cI did a classical theater training, and I built my career on theater. That\u2019s what I did way before I got any sort of TV jobs and trying to support myself in Scottish theater and then in London as well. And it\u2019s obviously a dream. I remember just\u00a0\u00a0going full circle like, going back to the very first show I ever did in youth theater. I was an extra on the main stage of the Royal Lyceum theatre in Edinburgh in a production of Macbeth<\/em>. And for me it\u2019s The Scottish Play <\/em>[for superstitious reasons, thespians often refer to Macbeth <\/em>by that title] obviously, but it\u2019s a play that\u2019s super-exciting. It\u2019s one of his shortest. It\u2019s bloody. It\u2019s got some incredible writing and some really fascinating character at the center of it. And I just remember being in the library as a drama student, reading books about various famous actors playing that role.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\tHeughan remembers seeing Adrian Noble\u2019s RSC manufacturing of the play touring Scotland with Derek Jacobi within the title function \u201cand just being in awe of them and dreaming that one day I\u2019d be there.\u201d<\/p>\n

But is his missus accountable, or, I ask Heughan, am I being sort to\u00a0Macbeth?<\/p>\n\n\t\u201cWhat\u2019s so great about Shakespeare,\u201d he says brightly, \u201cis that it can be read in many different ways and portrayed in different ways. And you could say, \u2018Well, it\u2019s always been in him and he\u2019s an evil man and he wanted to do this.\u2019 Or you could say that he is on this path that he\u2019s been set on by some supernatural powers or it\u2019s his ambition. Or in my case, I think perhaps it might be more that he loves someone so much and he wants to fulfill her ambition as well. But it\u2019s about making one decision and then the consequences of that, and he just can\u2019t get out of it and takes it way too far. But yeah, I mean, obviously he starts down this slippery slope and can\u2019t stop it and goes really far with it, but it\u2019s super-fascinating. I mean, we haven\u2019t started rehearsals yet, but we\u2019ll be looking at\u00a0what is it that drives him and all of the superstition around it as well.\u201d<\/p>\n
\n\tIn phrases of wrongheaded, misguided\u00a0polices, I point out, mischievously, if the White House is perhaps an acceptable location\u00a0for the play to be set.<\/p>\n
\n\t\u201cYeah, again, I think it\u2019s the beauty of Shakespeare is you can always draw parallels, and that\u2019s why it\u2019s still so popular now. You can look at any country or anything that\u2019s going on anywhere and see that in the wrong hands, power corrupts. I mean, he really does shut everyone down and start to destroy anyone that can pose a threat to him. So yeah, I won\u2019t be playing it with a ginger wig or in a suit.\u201d<\/p>\n
\n\tOr an overlong blue tie, I add wickedly.<\/p>\n
\n\t\u201cWell, you never know. Maybe I will,\u201d he responds wryly.<\/p>\n
\n\tActually, Heughan and Williams have had discussions with director Raggett about the place to set it.<\/p>\n
\n\t\u201cWe\u2019ve been talking about lots of different ways of portraying it and whether that\u2019s, I feel, been done before. But you could set it the conflict in Ukraine or on the Russian border or whatever, or you could set it, as you suggested, in America right now. It could be kind of set anywhere. So we haven\u2019t fully decided, but I think we know which direction we\u2019re going.\u201d<\/p>\n

So this is really cool. It\u2019s a chance for me to sort of, I don\u2019t know, find out who I am again or where I was and see what the next step is. And it feels like home already going into Stratford-upon-Avon. \u2026 It feels familiar and walking onto the stage and soaking that up. So it\u2019s a part of myself that I\u2019ve perhaps had forgotten about.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\tAlso, he provides that he feels proud as a local of Scotland to be taking part in a job that\u2019s related to the nation of his beginning.<\/p>\n
