But in contrast to another Palme d\u2019Or contenders, it touched the viewers as nicely.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cI\u2019m grateful and a bit exhausted, but most of all relieved. I had a feeling yesterday that people received it well, and I was in a room with a lot of love. It\u2019s an emotional, personal piece of cinema,\u201d he tells\u00a0<em>Variety<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tIn the movie, sisters Nora (Reinsve) and Agnes (Lilleaas) must say goodbye to their late mom \u2014 and good day to their absentee father Gustav, a movie director struggling to get new function off the bottom. But he just lately wrote a script about his personal mother, who killed himself when he was a boy. And needs the newly well-known Nora to play the lead.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tAlthough he\u2019s speaking a couple of fellow director, Trier \u201cdoesn\u2019t feel like Gustav,\u201d he says.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cI started writing it from the perspective of the sisters and\u00a0<em>then<\/em>\u00a0I tried to humanize Gustav. He comes from a completely different generation; he\u2019s a part of that \u201880s, \u201890s cinema. But you\u2019re right: maybe I\u2019m exercising my anxieties of what it\u2019s like to come to an end of a directorial career?\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tHe provides: \u201cThat\u2019s why I like Westerns: so many of them are about the end of an era. That\u2019s just the way things go. Many people from that generation are slowly fading away from our industry, and one day it\u2019ll be my turn.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tBefore he wanders away like John Wayne in \u201cThe Searchers,\u201d Trier\u2019s joyful to speak about \u201cSentimental Value\u201d and the primary trio who\u2019s again at their outdated home and going through outdated secrets and techniques \u2014 together with that of Gustav\u2019s mom\u2019s previous.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cThe hardest part was to represent the past traumas of the Second World War, which I know from my family. It takes it into a slightly more political or historical perspective than I have in some of my other films. I grew up with a grandfather who was in the resistance and was tremendously traumatized: he was caught and barely survived. It created a climate of survival in the homes of our parents\u2019. And that affected emotional communication.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tTrier \u201cwanted to explore how inherited grief travels through the house and through the family.\u201d Working with common co-writer Eskil Vogt made it simpler to get a ways.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cThere\u2019s also this notion of humanist cinema. I can\u2019t write about antagonists, even though the world is all about that right now. The antagonist and \u2018the other\u2019 as an enemy. It doesn\u2019t interest me. I\u2019m interested in understanding the complexity of why people end up hurting and disappointing each other. I\u2019m interested in tenderness. I think it comes from the director\u2019s personality as well. I genuinely \u2026 like people. I\u2019m an extrovert and I\u2019m curious. And if some find that style too \u2018emotional,\u2019 fuck it. That\u2019s who I am.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tGustav\u2019s avoiding feelings, which makes issues laborious for his daughters. But a minimum of he can write a script.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cThat\u2019s the core of the story: that\u2019s all he can do. In the beginning, we think he\u2019s an asshole for doing it. We think he\u2019s trying to benefit from Nora\u2019s fame. I\u2019m generalizing a bit, but Gustav Borg, and other men of his generation, weren\u2019t raised with the capacity for that emotional, tender language,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cI get asked a lot about gender perspectives on characters. I need these characters to be myself as well. They\u2019re me and then they are not. I know Renate, so she can come back with some feedback. But why should it be easier to write a man like Gustav, so much older than me, than to write a woman who\u2019s closer to my age?\u201d he wonders.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cMe, I was [allowed to cry]. I used to skateboard, and we did talk a lot about emotions, but we were also kind of tough. I broke my arms and legs, and that\u2019s not when you cry. There\u2019s this kind of shamefulness around it, but people that deny emotions make terrible choices.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tA 3rd-generation filmmaker, he\u2019s had a digicam in his palms all his life. \u201cIt\u2019s easier for me than writing or doing anything else.\u201d But whereas Gustav hires U.S. star (Fanning) to behave in his English-language film, Trier enjoys his personal approach of working for now.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cWhen I grew up, everyone was playing music. I was a shitty drummer and got kicked out of the punk band I was in. But I\u2019m a filmmaker now, and I try to have the same band,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cThis industry is so big. I love experimentation, and I love mainstream, but I\u2019d say: Maybe we can do something in between? That\u2019s a big question: Can you stay at home and be successful? Right now, I\u2019m experiencing my dream, which was to be a local band that had fans around the world. \u2018Fans\u2019 sounds a bit pretentious, but at least an audience,\u201d he says.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cWith this one, it really felt like we were in it for the right reasons. We have Neon in the U.S., and they\u2019re doing a great job, but what\u2019s Hollywood today, really? I love the fact we have films with Tom Cruise, and I will see \u2018Mission: Impossible,\u2019 but I\u2019d never compromise the kind of creative control I\u2019ve had from film one. I don\u2019t know another system that could offer me this way of working.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tHe doesn\u2019t take it with no consideration, he admits.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cWith every film, I have this little demon at the back of my head, telling me it\u2019s the last one. You never feel safe. Making a film means always going through a little bit of a crisis. I remember reading an interview with Philip Roth once, and he said that with every new book, it felt impossible.
