Grammy nominated harpist Brandee Younger<\/strong><\/a> has introduced a brand new album, Gadabout Season<\/em>. Produced by bassist Rashaan Carter, the 10-track file options particular company Shabaka, Courtney Bryan, Niia, and Josh Johnson. The title monitor, which options vibraphonist Joel Ross, Makaya McCraven on percussion, and Shabaka on clarinet, is out now. Gadabout Season<\/em> is Younger\u2019s third album for the legendary Impulse! label and is out in June.<\/p>\n Gababout is a phrase for a carefree pleasure-seeker at all times in movement, pursuing radiance within the midst of battle. \u201cWhen it came time to write a piece to represent happiness, \u2018Gadabout Season\u2019 felt like the perfect title,\u201d says Younger.<\/p>\n \u201cThe album reflects the journey\u2014the search for meaning and beauty amid life\u2019s most complex moments, ultimately emerging with a deeper sense of self,\u201d says Younger, who wrote or co-wrote almost each composition. \u201cMusically Gadabout Season<\/em> is more creative and slightly more cerebral than my other works.\u201d<\/p>\n Here, the self-taught Younger steps into her personal compositional voice, crafting music that blends jazz, classical, R&B, hip-hop, and digital textures. \u201cThis writing process forced me to be completely honest,\u201d she says. \u201cI\u2019m not hiding behind someone else\u2019s work.\u201d<\/p>\n Most of the album was written at Younger\u2019s cousin\u2019s peaceable cabin in upstate New York. She later workshopped the songs with Carter and drummer Allan Mednard. Gadabout Season<\/em> was tracked over a number of months within the second half of 2024 with Carter producing and engineering the album from Younger\u2019s Harlem condo. \u201cI\u2019m used to doing one and done in the studio,\u201d Younger says. \u201cThis recording process was slow and intentional, allowing the sound of the album to reveal itself over time and mirroring a journey of discovery.\u201d At the tip of every session, the trio devoted time to sketch out concepts and improvise, which led to the tracks \u201cReckoning,\u201d \u201cDiscernment,\u201d and \u201cEnd Means.\u201d<\/p>\n Younger\u2019s efficiency on Gadabout Season<\/em> is knowledgeable by a \u201clife-changing\u201d instrument that entered her life, a harp belonging to the late Alice Coltrane<\/strong><\/a>. She turned its custodian in late 2024 after the harp was restored in honor of \u201cThe Year of Alice,\u201d a sequence of high-profile releases, occasions, and reveals co-sponsored by Impulse!. \u201cIt had to become my own,\u201d she says of changing into snug with the majestic instrument. \u201cThis was not my first time playing the harp, but as this new music was unique to me, I had to become one with it at home.\u201d<\/p>\n The pianist-composer, MacArthur Fellow, and frequent Younger collaborator Courtney Bryan seems on \u201cSurrender.\u201d Inspired by Britten\u2019s A Ceremony of Carols<\/em>, \u201cSurrender\u201d summons up that second of \u201cgoing to the altar and giving all,\u201d says Younger. \u201cTo me, this is the most revealing piece on the album. It\u2019s about seeking solace in quiet surrender.\u201d Younger describes one other music, \u201cBBL,\u201d as a \u201cmusical confrontation.\u201d \u201cIf it had lyrics, it would have an advisory warning,\u201d she says. \u201cI left no room for a civil conversation.\u201d<\/p>\n Younger\u2019s first LP for Impulse! was 2021\u2019s Somewhere Different<\/em><\/strong><\/a>. A monitor from that album, \u201cBeautiful Is Black,\u201d earned Younger a Grammy nomination within the Best Instrumental Composition class, making her the primary Black feminine solo artist to realize this. 2023\u2019s Brand New Life<\/em><\/a><\/strong> pays tribute to the Black feminine harpist Dorothy Ashby<\/strong><\/a> and received the 2024 NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Jazz Album.
