MANILA, Philippines \u2014\u00a0 Around 1,300 residents of two barangays in Surigao City and the Mamanwa tribe signed a petition opposing to large-scale unlawful mining of their areas.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u00a0In January 2024, the residents mentioned they observed the 24\/7 land excavation of the corporate reportedly mining golf.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cThey had been using their permits to make it appear that there exists a legal operation under the guise of a legitimate quarry where in fact they are not!\u201d the petitioners mentioned.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cClearly, under plain view, they are operating an illegal large-scale mining in our place albeit a lack of necessary permits, clearances, and other mandatory requisites as well as prior and proper public consultation and consent, and in clear violation of the various environmental laws,\u201d they added.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The residents additionally requested the company to conduct a radical investigation into the exercise and maintain the individuals behind, together with protectors of the unlawful mining exercise accountable.\u00a0<\/p>\n

    During the House committee on appropriations listening to on the DENR\u2019s finances final August, the unlawful quarrying within the mainland of Surigao del Norte province was raised.\u00a0<\/p>\n

    In response, the DENR findings confirmed that 30 quarry operators have been monitored.<\/p>\n

    \u201cOut of 30 operators, 10 are operating without ECC and three are operating with ECC but for issuance of Notice of Violations for Water Discharge Permit and Permit to Operate,\u201d the report reads.\u00a0<\/p>\n

    In line with this, the company advisable the provincial authorities and native authorities unit of Surigao to \u201cstrictly conduct regular patrolling and monitoring, document and report to the concerned agencies and offices any signs of illegal activities therein.\u201d<\/p>\n
