In the last decade after leaving The Supremes in 1970, Diana Ross<\/a><\/strong> had monumental success. She launched ten solo albums, starred in Lady Sings the Blues<\/em> and The Wiz<\/em>, and was named the \u201cFemale Entertainer of the Century\u201d by Billboard<\/em>. But by the tip of the last decade, she knew it was time to show her sound \u201cupside down.\u201d So, in 1979, she commissioned Nile Rodgers and Bernard Edwards of disco group Chic to create materials for what grew to become the album Diana<\/em>.<\/p>\n \u201cI\u2019m Coming Out,\u201d the second single from Diana<\/em>, was born within the lavatory of a transgender night time membership known as the Gilded Grape. After observing a gaggle of drag queens dressed as Ross, Rodgers ran to a pay telephone and instructed Edwards to jot down down the lyrics \u201cI\u2019m coming out.\u201d \u201cBecause to the gay community, \u2018I\u2019m coming out\u2019 is a battle cry,\u2019\u201d Rodgers recalled saying to Edwards. \u201cIt means the same thing as James Brown<\/a><\/strong>\u2019s \u2018Say it loud \u2014 I\u2019m black and I\u2019m proud.\u2019\u201d While Ross initially cherished \u201cI\u2019m Coming Out,\u201d she later expressed uncertainty about each the track and the album as a complete. Following the 1979 Disco Demolition Night and declarations that the style was \u201cdead,\u201d she didn\u2019t need her sound to be perceived as outdated. At the final minute, she took Diana<\/em> to be remixed by Motown engineer Russ Terrana, who sped up most of the tracks and re-recorded Ross\u2019 vocals to make them sound extra distinguished.<\/p>\n
