\u201cSweep the floor,\u201d Rose replied and chuckled. <\/p>\n

\u201cYou were just kind of a jack-of-all trades,\u201d he mentioned. \u201cSometimes I\u2019d work on the cash register. Sometimes I\u2019d help the customers; stock shelves.\u201d <\/p>\n

Rose retired from REI in 1996. By that point, he was the tenting purchaser. \u201cIt was all the penny-nickel-dime items\u2014whistles, you name it. Lapel pins,\u201d he mentioned in his typical understated method. Pressed, he acknowledged that \u201cit was actually one of the biggest departments, for dollar sales, because they had so many different items.\u201d <\/p>\n
