Country star Walker Hayes<\/a> continues to share his sobriety journey \u2014 revealing the precise second when he realized he wanted to cease consuming.\u00a0\n<\/p>\n

\u201cI was working a night job at Costco stocking produce and playing shows at night,\u201d Hayes, 44, advised Today<\/em><\/a> hosts Hoda Kotb<\/a> and Jenna Bush Hager<\/a>, including that his spouse Laney<\/a> had simply welcomed their sixth baby<\/a>, Everly.\u00a0\n<\/p>\n

\u201cLife was just wild, it was a lot on my body and I just woke up on a Saturday and I just knew if I did this one more day my body would be affected,\u201d the “Fancy Like” singer mentioned. \u201cSome organ \u2014 you know, look, I’m not a scientist. I’m not a doctor. I just woke up and it felt like if I do it one more day I might die.\u201d\n<\/p>\n

Hayes, who shared that he began consuming at age 13, mentioned that he had this epiphany at age 36 \u2014\u00a0and began his sobriety journey in small levels.\u00a0\n<\/p>\n

\u201cI went one day to two, two days turned into a week,\u201d Hayes \u2014 who chronicles relationship with alcohol in his new album, Sober Thoughts \u2014<\/em> mentioned.\u00a0\n<\/p>\n

\u201cSobriety \u2014 [when] you’ve been drunk that long … you get addicted to … the clarity, the pep in your step. You go to the gym and you’re like, \u2018I feel like I’m 17.\u2019\u201d\u00a0\n<\/p>\n

\u201cA month turned into a year and then I just didn’t want to go backwards,\u201d Hayes mentioned.\n<\/p>\n

Hayes mentioned he\u2019s not shy to speak about being eight years sober,<\/a> saying, \u201cI want to share that as much as I can.\u201d\n<\/p>\n

\u201cI think most recovering alcoholics feel the same way, you know. Sobriety is so amazing that you’d love to pass it along. It’s a great option that we have in life and there is freedom from addiction,\u201d Hayes mentioned.\n<\/p>\n

\u201cI swear, if you ask my publishing company, I probably write a song a week about recovery, and so, I’m so grateful,\u201d he mentioned, explaining that one music, \u201cSame Drunk,\u201d is about coping mechanisms.\n<\/p>\n

\u201cA lot of our life, we just balance from coping mechanism to coping mechanism. Like coffee, for instance. I\u2019m so addicted to coffee,\u201d he mentioned, including, \u201cBut you know, it doesn\u2019t destroy my life.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n
