\n\t\u201cThere were Black people who were triggered by seeing something that they weren\u2019t ready to admit in themselves,\u201d Smith stated. \u201cLike, \u2018I\u2019ve never made space for white people in this way.\u2019 But then there are Black people who are like, \u2018This is me, this is what I\u2019ve had to do to survive.\u2019 This shows that we\u2019re not a monolith. This art is controversial because it expands what Black art can be and speaks about such a specific side of Blackness and survival that we haven\u2019t really seen before\u2026this micro-aggressive corporate racism.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tSpeaking to Variety <\/em>earlier than the Sundance Film Festival<\/a>, Libii additionally addressed his determination to deal with such a delicate, race-driven challenge.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cThe subject matter I\u2019m playing with is really sensitive and raw, and people have such strong, visceral feelings about it,\u201d the filmmaker stated. \u201cI think means that we\u2019re pointed in the right direction in terms of what we should be talking about. I\u2019m genuinely excited for people to bring that same passion and political conviction into what I think is the more sophisticated and intricate and nuanced conversation that the full film is.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tWhat Libii is eagerly anticipating, although, is the response from the reside viewers. \u201cI love the audience reaction, especially because it\u2019s a comedy, so people giving other people permission to laugh \u2013 especially about some of the tricker stuff \u2014 is something I\u2019m looking forward to,\u201d he stated.<\/p>\n
