Larry Wilmore<\/a> hosted the occasion and launched this 12 months\u2019s 11 winners, together with writers behind the collection \u201cMrs. Davis,\u201d \u201cFleishman is in Trouble\u201d and \u201cTiny Beautiful Things.\u201d But earlier than the awards have been handed out, Wilmore took a second to pay tribute to Lear. And remarks from Lear\u2019s spouse, Lyn, have been shared with the viewers. <\/p>\n\n\t\u201cWell you got to say this about Norman \u2013 the man knew how to make an exit,\u201d Wilmore joked. \u201cHe knew his viewers. And wished us to ensure we have been all listening.<\/p>\n
\n\t\u201cA giant has left us and we\u2019re going to do him proud,\u201d he added. \u201cThis evening meant a lot to Norman because he believed television can reflect our best. That\u2019s why the Sentinel Awards were created \u2013 to honor television\u2019s best and brightest writing.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n
\n\tAt the highest of the 2023 Sentinel Awards, held on the Writers Guild Theater in Beverly Hills, Norman Lear Center founding director Marty Kaplan learn the assertion from Lyn Lear. \u201cI would have been there tonight if not for the passing of our beloved Norman,\u201d she stated within the assertion. \u201cHe was so proud of the work of The Lear Center and Hollywood Health and Society. And he would not have wanted all of us to mourn. He would want us to celebrate the important shows you are honoring tonight, and most of all\u2026 he would want us to laugh.\u201d<\/p>\n
\n\tAdded Kaplan: \u201cNorman\u2019s shows moved our hearts and minds to embrace our common humanity and live up to what\u2019s best in us. Doing that is why these winning writers are being honored.\u201d<\/p>\n
\n\tThe Sentinel Award acknowledges writers for his or her \u201cmeaningful and accurate portrayals onscreen that tackled timely and important topics including abortion, systemic racism, climate change, and mental health.\u201d<\/p>\n
\n\t\u201cThese writers and honorees this year have all made a commitment to telling stories that not only reach audiences, but make a significant impact far beyond the small screen,\u201d stated Hollywood, Health & Society program director Kate Folb. \u201cIt\u2019s such an honor to bring these writers together after the strikes and celebrate their work.\u201d<\/p>\n
\n\tSpeaking about Lear, Folb added: \u201cThey say never to meet your heroes because you might be disappointed. Not so when I met Norman. He was everything I imagined and so much more. I feel so blessed to have been a very small part of his massive universe.\u201d<\/p>\n
\n\tPresenters this 12 months included Emmy-nominated actor and producer Kathryn Hahn, Emmy-winning producer\/choreographer and actor Debbie Allen, Grammy-winning performer and actor Ben Harper, actor Adam Brody, comic and actor Frankie Qui\u00f1ones, and actors Logan Marmino, Jake McDorman, Michael McKean, Elizabeth Tulloch and Barrett Doss.<\/p>\n
