[Warning: Potentially Triggering Content]<\/strong><\/p>\n Cheryl Burke<\/strong> is getting candid about all of the trauma she\u2019s confronted through the years.<\/p>\n The Dancing with the Stars<\/em> professional appeared on the most recent episode of Red Table Talk<\/em> on Wednesday, the place she opened up about how years of sexual abuse, bodily abuse, and poisonous relationships she skilled finally led to her habit to alcohol. [It\u2019s] waving at me. I didn\u2019t want this. My parents got divorced and I would\u2019ve loved to not have. That wasn\u2019t the plan going in. I\u2019m not proud of it, for sure. Date myself, right? Easier said than done because, you know, there\u2019s a difference of being alone versus lonely. And I am just trying to adjust and take the time because I owe it to myself. But one day at a time, one minute at a time.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n The 38-year-old tv persona went on to speak concerning the trauma and sample of abuse she handled through the years, recalling how it began when her mother and father obtained divorced when she was solely 2. When they obtained married, her stepdad wanted somebody to look at her at occasions and employed a \u201cretired mailman in his late 60s\u201d to babysit her. Cheryl says he began to molest her when she was solely 5 years outdated:<\/p>\n \u201cIt was more of a grooming experience. Because it wasn\u2019t intercourse. It was other \u2014 you know, stuff that happened, sexual acts \u2014 but I never physically felt hurt. Like, there was moments \u2014 and I\u2019m gonna say it now, it didn\u2019t feel bad. It was actually intimate. He was grooming me, and he was my definition of love. This is what love equaled, right? Seeing my father\u2019s infidelity, being abused by this old retired mailman, and I didn\u2019t really know what a \u2018healthy\u2019 relationship is or was. There wasn\u2019t a stable father figure in my life. It\u2019s like brainwashing at those moments in your childhood when it really matters.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n That\u2019s what makes grooming so insidious. Heartbreaking\u2026<\/p>\n The tv host mentioned the abuse continued for \u201cmany years and no one said anything\u201d earlier than her older sister\u2019s pal \u201cdid the right thing, ran home to her parents, and told them, and then they contacted my family.\u201d Cheryl ended up testifying towards the person when she was 9 \u2014 and he was sentenced to 24 years in jail. Eventually, Cheryl grew to become concerned with ballroom dancing \u2014 one thing she mentioned \u201csaved my life\u201d:<\/p>\n \u201cBallroom was something that was fun, but you had to grow up fast. Here I am wearing tiny little skimpy dance costumes, eyelashes, fake tan and I\u2019m 11. It was amazing. I mean, thank god for dancing, it saved my life.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n While Cheryl is grateful for dancing, she didn\u2019t notice till later in life that it wasn\u2019t at all times a secure surroundings:<\/p>\n \u201cBut within this industry of the competitive ballroom world, it is so much a man\u2019s world. The man leads the woman follows \u2014 off the dance floor and on the dance floor. And with that comes abusive partners and abusive coaches. Were there acts of sexual abuse and mental abuse? 100%. And am I just coming to realize that? Yeah, for sure, as I continue to do the work.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n Then Burke seemed again on her highschool expertise and alleged she had two boyfriends \u201cthat were physically and emotionally abusive to a whole other level.\u201d She defined:<\/p>\n \u201cFor me, love equaled abuse. Love equaled infidelity. Love equaled manipulating, narcissistic behaviors.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n That\u2019s when she recounted the incident when she was horrifically whipped with a belt<\/a> in entrance of her ex-boyfriend\u2019s mother and father, who sat there and did nothing. Despite the horrible second, Cheryl remembered being in denial about what occurred on the time:<\/p>\n \u201cIt wasn\u2019t like he was hitting me. He was whipping me. But I would see these welts and even that, I was like, \u2018Oh, that\u2019s not really there.\u2019 I think I was in shock, and fight, flight or freeze. Got in my car, he jumped in his car, kept banging up the back of my car so that I\u2019d pull over, and I wasn\u2019t allowed to have friends, let alone dance. I wasn\u2019t allowed to stay at after school programs or even, God forbid, look at somebody.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n She added:<\/p>\n \u201cBecause of this person who was very controlling. It didn\u2019t stop my relationship with him because I loved the, \u2018Oh, everything\u2019s gonna be OK.\u2019 I was addicted to that. This is what I\u2019m trying to reprogram in my brain, is that constant adrenaline rush that I\u2019m so addicted to. It\u2019s not sustainable.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n This is what finally led her to drink to be able to \u201cnumb\u201d the whole lot occurring in her life:<\/p>\n \u201cI was just in survival mode. I used alcohol to numb. And I\u2019m an addict and I was a functioning addict. It was when I wasn\u2019t drinking people were like, \u2018What\u2019s wrong with you?\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n Cheryl then mentioned she discovered she was \u201conly attracted to chauvinistic men\u201d and \u201cmommy daddy figures\u201d \u2013 to the purpose the place she was \u201cdisgusted\u201d by her first dance accomplice as a result of he was too \u201csweet.\u201d Later on, she touched on her divorce from Matthew<\/a> and revealed that she solely obtained married to him in 2019 to see if she was \u201cgood enough\u201d:<\/p>\n \u201cI mean, we dated when I first got into this business in 2006, and then took a break for a decade, dated again.
