Newport Contemporary Ballet\u00a0(NCB)\u00a0(previously identified\u00a0as Island Moving Company)\u00a0has\u00a0introduced particulars for\u00a0Catch Fire!,\u00a0<\/em>the\u00a0Company\u2019s new\u00a0Frontier Series\u00a0manufacturing.\u00a0The collection runs\u00a0May\u00a018-20,\u00a0on the WaterFire Arts Center in Providence.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Catch Fire!\u00a0<\/em>is curated by NCB Artistic Director Danielle Genest and\u00a0options\u00a0two world premiere works. Working with hearth as a central theme, this system consists of an all-new\u00a0FIREBIRD<\/em>\u00a0choreographed\u00a0and\u00a0staged by Genest, and a brand new work entitled\u00a0ASHES\u00a0<\/em>by visiting visitor choreographer Tristian Griffin.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe\u00a0company is excited to return to Providence and\u00a0the WaterFire Arts Center this spring with our inaugural Frontier Series\u00a0production,\u00a0Catch Fire!<\/em> True to its name,\u00a0NCB\u2019s\u00a0Frontier Series engages\u00a0our\u00a0artists to push past familiar boundaries and explore new\u00a0perspectives and approaches to dancemaking,\u201d\u00a0mentioned\u00a0NCB\u00a0Executive Director Peter Bramante.<\/p>\n

Genest\u00a0added, \u201cMy idea for\u00a0Catch Fire!\u00a0<\/em>started with\u00a0FIREBIRD<\/em>, which will be a unique blend of classical and contemporary ballet. I wanted to have a strong piece of contemporary dance on the program to create balance and, once again, highlight the broad spectrum of work that Newport Contemporary Ballet does. Tristian Griffin immediately came to mind. His choreography is full of power and originality, and I knew he would have a beautiful way of connecting to the theme.\u201d<\/p>\n

The\u00a0Firebird<\/em>\u00a0is likely one of the world\u2019s most well-known ballets\u00a0and\u00a0musical compositions, and a favourite ballet of Genest. Finding inspiration from the beloved story,\u00a0Genest got down to create a brand new interpretation of the basic ballet set to Stravinsky\u2019s fascinating rating.\u00a0The authentic rating was written in 1910, and was commissioned by Sergei Diaghilev, founding father of Ballets Russes,\u00a0for\u00a0the Paris Opera House\u00a0and choreographed by Michel Fokine.\u00a0The profitable premiere of\u00a0the\u00a0Firebird<\/em>\u00a0in 1910 was the beginning\u00a0of an 18-year collaborative partnership between Stravinsky\u00a0and\u00a0Diaghilev, leading to different well-known\u00a0ballets, together with\u00a0Petrushka\u00a0<\/em>(1911),\u00a0The Rite of Spring\u00a0<\/em>(1913)\u00a0and\u00a0Apollo\u00a0<\/em>(1928).<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is a ballet that I loved\u00a0performing and have always wanted\u00a0to choreograph,\u201d Genest mentioned.\u00a0\u201cFIREBIRD<\/em>\u00a0explores themes of good, evil and magic at the intersection of the human and mythological worlds. I am intrigued by the concept, inspired by the music and excited to bring this folk tale forward in a fresh, dynamic way.\u201d<\/p>\n

Local artist\/sculptor Shawndavid Berry\u00a0is collaborating with Genest to supply scenic design\u00a0and set items\u00a0for\u00a0FIREBIRD.\u00a0<\/em>Berry is a sculptor and painter working to specific motion\u00a0and evoke emotion by his mediums. He describes his course of for creating set\u00a0and\u00a0scenic design parts for Genest\u2019s\u00a0FIREBIRD<\/em> as\u00a0\u201cconnecting matter from fluid, vapor to solid and metaphysical, hoping to provide a cohesive balance between dancers and scenery.\u201d<\/p>\n

NCB\u00a0Resident\u00a0Costume\u00a0Designer Eileen\u00a0Stoops\u00a0will\u00a0design\u00a0the\u00a0costumes.<\/p>\n

Choreographer Tristian\u00a0Griffin\u00a0is happy to work with NCB\u00a0once more.\u00a0\u201cThis will be my second work\u00a0for\u00a0the company.\u00a0I am looking forward to collaborating with the dancers as well as pushing myself as a creator and choreographer.\u201d\u00a0Griffin goes on to\u00a0describe his new dance,\u00a0ASHES,<\/em>\u00a0as\u00a0a piece in regards to the flame that resides in each particular person.\u00a0Composer\u00a0Michael Wall and\u00a0Costume Designer\u00a0Naomi Tanioka contributed to\u00a0the imaginative and prescient of Griffin\u2019s\u00a0new work.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve\u00a0been thinking how\u00a0the life of the flame represents the evolution of the soul as it progresses during our lifetime,\u201d Griffin defined. \u201cA life starts off with a spark, similar to kindling a fire. And the last breath we draw is like a flame being blown out.\u201d<\/p>\n

A local of Kansas City, MO,\u00a0Griffin\u00a0danced with Garth Fagan Dance and the Lyric Opera of Kansas City.\u00a0Over the previous yr, he taught full-time on the University of Kansas as a Visiting Professor of Practice. Currently, Griffin is\u00a0in\u00a0his\u00a0second yr as an\u00a0Artist-in-Residence at\u00a0Lawrence\u00a0Arts Center.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n
