Loreen\u2019s success<\/strong><\/a> at this year\u2019s Eurovision Song Contest may have brought Sweden its seventh victory in the competition, and ensured that the country hosts next year\u2019s event. But that homecoming will not feature ABBA<\/strong><\/a>, despite the 2024 show marking the 50th anniversary of the group\u2019s breakthrough win<\/strong><\/a> with \u201cWaterloo.\u201d<\/p>\n

In a new interview<\/strong><\/a> for the BBC\u2019s Newsnight<\/em> program, ABBA members Benny Andersson<\/strong><\/a> and Bj\u00f6rn Ulvaeus say that the group would not appear at Eurovision next year even if asked, either to perform or simply to appear.<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t want to,\u201d says Andersson firmly. \u201cAnd if I don\u2019t want to, the others won\u2019t. It\u2019s the same for all four of us. Someone says no, it\u2019s a no.\u201d Added Ulvaeus: \u201cWe can celebrate 50 years of ABBA without us being on stage.\u201d<\/p>\n

The pair also spoke about the success of the groundbreaking live show<\/strong><\/a> Voyage<\/em>, featuring avatars of the group as their younger selves, saying that it was \u201csurpassing every expectation.\u201d Noted Andersson: \u201cWe achieved more than we could ever hope for\u2026seeing this happening after four or five years of work\u2026and realising that the audience actually connected to what was on stage.\u201d<\/p>\n

Noted Ulvaeus: \u201cThat emotional connection was the important thing for us. We never knew until we started whether that would work. Their intellect is telling them that we\u2019re not there \u2013 but emotionally they are connected, which is a fantastic thing.\u201d<\/p>\n

He expressed the hope that the show would be able to go to Australia, one of the first worldwide markets to embrace ABBA and their music. \u201cIt would feel good to go back there and say thank-you to Australians for supporting us from day one,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Reflecting on the pair\u2019s 57-year friendship and working relationship, Ulvaeus said: \u201cBecause we never stood still none of us has stagnated, which so often happens in songwriting duos. We\u2019ve had different opinions, many, many,\u201d and Andersson mused: \u201cBut it doesn\u2019t matter, because what we\u2019ve achieved together, keeps us together.\u201d<\/p>\n
