After a rollout lasting many months, the Smashing Pumpkins launched their large new rock opera ATUM<\/em><\/a> at this time. It nearly leaked six months early due to a hacker who efficiently gouged Billy Corgan for a hefty ransom. Corgan mentioned the incident at this time on Audacy\u2019s Klein. Ally. Show.<\/em><\/a> on the KROQ studios in Los Angeles.<\/p>\n As Corgan defined it, a fan contacted him to let him know 9 songs had leaked, \u201cand they were all probably the most catchy, single-y type songs.\u201d Corgan continued, \u201cSomehow, some hacker was offering the files for money, and we were able to trace it, and pay off, and keep it from leaking\u2026 and the FBI got involved.\u201d The cost got here \u201cout of my pocket, unfortunately.\u201d<\/p>\n Corgan appeared amazed at what sort of music the hacker had obtained: \u201cThey strangely had stuff\u2026 I don\u2019t know how they got what they got.\u201d He elaborated, \u201cWhat we were able to do was stop the leak from happening. It was a mercenary person who would hack somebody\u2026 they had stuff from other artists. It wasn\u2019t some Pumpkins fan\u2026 and somehow they gave some information that allowed the FBI to track them.\u201d<\/p>\n Corgan now suspects the operation has gone kaputt: \u201cI don\u2019t know the end result of it yet. They had stuff that was shocking to me, classic stuff from bands in the past probably doing re-issues.
